The RN – Nursing position involves assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and supervising individualized care for patients in a psychiatric emergency department, ensuring patient safety and therapeutic goals. The nurse collaborates with healthcare teams, documents care plans, provides education, and may supervise non-RN staff while occasionally floating to inpatient psychiatric units. Qualifications include a valid RN license, preferably a BSN, with mental health or emergency department experience preferred, and required certifications such as BLS and CPI.

ReportingReports to the Manager of the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit or his/her designee. The Registered Nurse (RN) assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and supervises individual care patients in the psychiatric emergency department according to all current policies and procedures. The RN may provide supervision of non-RN (nursing) personnel i.e. MHW or PCA. The RN may be required to work on the inpatient psychiatric unit as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned or requested in order to maintain a high level of service. Works collaboratively with the PES clinicians to achieve optimum outcomes.
- Promotes a safe environment for the protection of the patient and others from injury, and effectively manages crisis situations and treatment interactions with due respect for patient rights, legal/ethical obligations, and the therapeutic goals of any interventions used.
- MHWs, PCAs, new hires.
Education
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN Preferred. Proficient in use of computer software to include electronic patient records. Must have ability to use internet for literature searches regarding care for patients.
Experience
Mental Health, or ED experience preferred. Hospital and unit-based orientation provided.
Licensure
Valid State of Connecticut Registered Nurse license. BLS required. CPI within 6 months of hire required.
