2026‑27 School Year

182 days per year; 7.5 hours per day

Purpose Statement

The Counselor‑Elementary role implements the Missouri Model Guidance Program, supports instructional processes, helps students develop career and life goals, supports academic achievement, provides individual and group counseling, supports students during crises, enhances overall site efficiency, and collaborates with community agencies, parents, teachers, support staff, and the community.

Essential Functions
  • Collaborate with teachers, Focus Facilitator, and the Student Assistant Team/Program to identify and support comprehensive student programs.
  • Coordinate testing materials for the school site to ensure test security protocols are strictly followed.
  • Coordinate with teachers, resource specialists, and community partners to provide or receive requested information and to make recommendations.
  • Develop special activities and programs for students and parents to assist with successful transitions at all educational levels.
  • Monitor students’ progress to identify issues and take appropriate actions to increase student success.
  • Participate in workshops, committees, community groups, and other meetings to gather and share information related to the job assignment.
  • Provide individual and group counseling and guidance (e.g., friendship, changing families, social and emotional support) to enhance student success in school.
  • Prepare reports, student activities, correspondence, and other materials for documentation and communication.
  • Present information to staff, students, and parents to communicate insights, obtain feedback, and ensure adherence to internal controls.
  • Present lessons to students following district curriculum.
  • Research program eligibility requirements to provide up‑to‑date, accurate counsel to students.
  • Respond to emergency situations to provide needed intervention and counseling.
  • Serve as a resource to staff, parents, and community members for interventions, information, and assistance as requested.
Other Functions
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Skills: Apply assessment instruments; prepare and maintain accurate records; plan and manage projects; use pertinent software applications.
  • Knowledge: Understand stages of child development; knowledge of codes, laws, rules, regulations, policies; awareness of community resources; knowledge of treatment modalities and assessment.
  • Abilities: Schedule and manage activities, meetings, and events; gather, collate, and classify data; use basic job‑related equipment; collaborate with diverse groups; maintain confidentiality; meet deadlines and schedules; set priorities; work as part of a team; handle frequent interruptions.
Responsibility

Work under limited supervision using standardized practices; lead, guide, and coordinate others; operate within a defined budget; utilize resources from other work units when required; continually impact the organization’s services.

Working Environment

Physical demands include some lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling; stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling; fine finger dexterity. Typical activity distribution: 40% sitting, 30% walking, 30% standing. The job is performed in a generally hazard‑free environment.

Experience
