The Interpreter position serves as a member of the Missouri Disaster Medical Assistance Team (MO DMAT‑1). This position acts as a verbal communicator, converting spoken messages between languages in real‑time to facilitate better understanding. This position would be embedded within a medical tent or nearby facility, which could compare to an urgent care or ER setting based on the circumstances of each situation.
Job Description- Interprets verbal communication from one language to another (preferably Arabic, Dutch, German, Portuguese or Spanish) to English and can do so in real time within a medical setting.
- Adheres to confidentiality and professionalism standards within MO DMAT‑1.
- Performs other related duties as required to facilitate efficient language interpretation for a variety of patients, medical personnel, and emergency response leadership.
- Fluent in requested languages needed:
Arabic, Dutch, German, Portuguese.
Lack of post‑secondary education will not be used as the sole basis denying consideration to any applicant.
Knowledge, Skill & Abilities- Practical knowledge of basic medical terminology and the ability to describe ongoing activities of the medical team in multiple languages.
- Skill in active listening, concentration, memory retention and critical thinking processes.
- Excellent skills in oral communication to interact with patients and medical personnel in multiple languages.
- Near‑native fluency in both source and target languages and the ability to adjust/adapt techniques to each interaction.
- Ability to effectively organize and plan during crisis situations.
- Possess good inter-organization coordination skills, work well with technical experts, local officials, and other organizations.
- Ability to set priorities, plan, and implement activities to maximize efficiency.
- Ability to establish the necessary relationships with outside medical and mortuary services organizations in order to provide for efficient operations.
- Ability to keep abreast of developments both within the organization and in outside arenas affecting the organization as a whole (disaster medicine, public health, and disaster response/relief operations).
- Working in a variety of climatic conditions and extreme weather.
- Ability to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.
- Ability to withstand and witness a variety of situations including medical care.
- Ability to respond quickly to sounds.
- Ability to see and respond to dangerous situations.
- Ability to work in an austere environment.
