Cardiac Cath Lab Registered Nurse Overview

Barnes‑Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is ranked as one of the nation's top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. The Cardiac Cath Lab, a division of the Cardiovascular Procedure Center, utilizes advanced technology and achieves a 97 % success rate in acute interventional cases and a 100 % rate of STEMI patients receiving emergency percutaneous cardiac intervention within 90 minutes.

The Staff Nurse (RN) is an integral part of the patient care team, performing critical thinking and clinical expertise to assess hemodynamic, neurologic, and respiratory responses throughout procedures. The RN administers conscious sedation, continually monitors sedation levels, manages airways, and advocates for patients throughout care.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Minimum Education:

    Nursing Diploma/Associate's degree in Nursing.
  • No prior RN experience required.
  • Licensure:
    Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Preferred Education:

    Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
  • Preferred Experience:

    Prior critical care, emergency department, or cardiac catheterization laboratory experience required.
  • Preferred:
    At least 2 years of bedside experience.
  • Preferred:
    Must live within 30 minutes of Barnes‑Jewish Hospital for call requirements.
  • Preferred:
    Accepts ADN, BSN, and MSN candidates.
  • Preferred: BSN differential available.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation within nursing care standards.
  • Promote patient‑ and family‑centered care in a healing environment.
  • Educate patients and families on illness management, post‑treatment home care, and medication administration.
  • Participate in activities that promote patient safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.
  • Engage in professional development and interprofessional team collaboration.
  • Develop, implement, and document individualized care plans with defined goals.
  • Communicate care plans across the continuum of care proactively.
  • Use critical nursing skills to assess physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs.
  • Assess patient preferences, barriers, values, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and population‑specific needs.
  • Maintain constant state of alertness and adhere to safety‑sensitivities required by BJC.
