Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field and seven years of experience; or Master’s degree in biology or a related field with five years of experience; or Doctoral degree in biology or related field with two years of experience.

Develop and improve methods to study biological processes related to food microbiology and safety. The incumbent will write research proposals, establish experimental design, and implement project protocol. Design experiments for analysis and standardization of food microbiology and safety protocols.

Lead collection and analysis of data and interpret results to inform research questions and objectives. Collaborate with other researchers to create and evaluate new methods and technologies for detecting and controlling foodborne pathogens.

Independently design and execute research on the isolation and taxonomic identification of microorganisms from various citrus products and processes.

Manage laboratory activities and direct the work of other scientists, including graduate students, interns, and visiting scientists. Maintain accurate and up-to-date inventory records and material data sheets. Oversee purchase orders for supplies and equipment. Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols and regulations. Evaluate new lab technologies and collaborate with vendors to provide necessary equipment and resources.

Disseminate research results through reports, papers, and presentations. Manage cultivation and study of live specimens, including pathogenic microorganisms. Interpret data to inform research conclusions and recommendations. Create computational approaches for research needs, including data analysis and modeling. Collaborate with other researchers to prepare manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.

Administer biological research following specified protocols, ensuring the safe handling of hazardous chemicals and materials. Train team members and students in research methods and techniques related to food microbiology and safety. Write grants and participate in fundraising for research projects.
