Pay

The starting pay range for this position per hour is $22.00 - $24.00. The full pay range per hour is $22.00 - $37.40. Pay is based on labor markets, educational level, work experience, and certifications.

General Merchandise Team Leader Overview

As a General Merchandise (GM) Team Leader in Target’s General Merchandise department, you will:

  • Build a guest‑first culture and deliver guest experience commitments
  • Lead retail business fundamentals including sales trends, inventory management, and pricing/promotion strategies
  • Manage the planning, execution, and review of daily/weekly workload for department(s)
  • Coach, develop, evaluate, and retain hourly team members
  • Drive process improvements and operational efficiencies
Responsibilities
  • Deliver an Easy, Inspiring and Friendly guest experience, ensuring all team members are trained and accountable.
  • Observe and provide feedback, holding team members accountable while recognizing exemplary guest service.
  • Review area guest, financial, and team outcome metrics to identify opportunities, take action, and align the team on correct behaviors.
  • Lead the execution of daily/weekly workload to deliver on department and store sales goals and guest engagement, including receiving product, merchandising, signing, setting, and updating sales‑floor displays.
  • Educate the team on operational procedures, inventory management, and store profitability.
  • Assess reporting to identify gaps in GM processes and assist in developing improvement plans.
  • Assign daily tasks based on workload and traffic patterns, ensuring alignment with business priorities.
  • Assist in pick, pack, and ship fulfillment work (if applicable) and assess fulfillment reporting for gaps.
  • Ensure product is in stock, accurately priced, and properly signed on the sales floor.
  • Collaborate with all teams and leaders (including closing team) to keep the store guest ready.
  • Stay informed on relevant trends and products, relaying Target communications during team connections.
  • Evaluate candidates for open positions and build a talent pool for future leadership.
  • Model a culture of best practices through onboarding and coaching, closing skill gaps.
  • Support guest services such as back‑up cashier and digital fulfillment processes while maintaining compliance.
  • Demonstrate inclusivity, ethical conduct, and safety compliance, reporting and correcting hazards.
  • Execute physical security processes and merchandise protection strategies.
  • Assume store‑level LOD responsibilities when required.
  • Address all store emergency and compliance needs and any additional duties based on business needs.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; age 18 or older.
  • Previous retail experience preferred.
  • Ability to lead and hold others accountable.
  • Communicate on multiple‑frequency devices and operate handheld scanners and other technology.
  • Work independently and as part of a team, managing workload and prioritizing tasks.
  • Remain focused and composed in a fast‑paced environment while accomplishing multiple tasks.
  • Welcome and assist all guests and team members.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Access all areas of the building to respond to guest or team member issues.
  • Interpret instructions, reports, and information accurately.
  • Accurately handle cash register operations as needed.
  • Climb up and down ladders safely.
  • Scan, handle, and move merchandise efficiently and safely, including lifting up to 44 pounds.
  • Flexible work schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, closing shifts, and other peak times; reliable attendance required.
  • Capable of working in varying temperatures, humidity, and other environments.
  • Remain mobile throughout the scheduled shift.
