Repairman
Organization Unit:
Power Operations, Power Plants. Applicable to:
Fossil Fuel Plants.
- General range of electric arc and gas welding, brazing, pipe fitting, insulation installation/removal on power plant equipment.
- Work on structural steel erection and piping where certification is not required.
- Replace liner plates in fans, coal chutes, hoppers and perform welding repairs to castings and equipment.
- Fitting and welding of all sizes of piping and valves, including measuring, laying out, cutting, threading, bending, fitting, and installation of pipe and tubing.
- Replace flanges, valves, heater gaskets; valve repacking, repair and overhaul.
- Clean and replace condenser and heat exchanger tubes; repair traveling water screens as applicable.
- Perform refractory and insulation work covering furnace walls, slag tanks, hoppers, gas ducts, steam lines, boiler feed piping, steam and condensate drains, feedwater heaters, storage tanks, turbine casings, and steam chests.
- Take welder qualification tests as required; work from drawings and sketches.
- Check equipment isolation and protection; obtain materials.
- Set up rigging, operate lifting equipment, erect scaffolds, and use mobile equipment, shop equipment, portable power tools, hand tools, test equipment.
- Prepare reports and sketches; complete required forms.
- Follow prescribed safety precautions and safeguards.
- Check for explosive gases before operating torches.
- Ensure those under direction observe safety instructions.
- Execute work without disturbing other equipment.
- Deliver orders quickly and properly.
- Ensure accuracy within required tolerances/specifications.
- Maintain proper use and care of a wide variety of tools, materials, and equipment.
- Disposal of surplus and scrap materials after each job; keep work areas clean and orderly.
Full range of temperatures from very hot to sub‑freezing. Subject to noise, dust, fumes, odors, drafts, and inclement weather. Work in cramped and artificially lit areas.
HazardsPotential hazards include failures of nearby equipment, falling objects, burns from hot metal, piping or slag, eye injury from arc flashes, and other mechanical construction and maintenance risks. Possible exposure to noxious fumes.
Qualifications- Qualification standards as established in the Apprenticeship Program.
- If no graduating apprentice available, meet requirements in Supplementary Agreement on Uniform Practices Regarding Promotion to Repairman Jobs.
- Accurate, steady, calm in emergencies; normal physical strength and endurance; no color deficiency in vision.
- Must be able to work with apprentices and perform less skilled work as assigned.
Hourly Pay:
Grade Step OA 048 Step 1 of 1 (Top Step) – $52.42 USD. Position eligible for annual incentive payments based on company performance.
