JOB SUMMARY:

The Introduction to College Academics Instructor facilitates an 8-week online academic skills course designed to prepare high school junior and senior-level students for college-level success. This role involves developing and delivering engaging virtual instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, research, and study strategies while providing individualized feedback, office hours, and ongoing student support. The Introduction to College Academics Instructor promotes college readiness skills, prepares a final performance summary report, and communicates regularly with students and families.

DUTIES AND TASKS:

Facilitate an 8-week online academic skills course;

* Lead engaging and interactive online sessions, providing instruction on key academic skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and research;

* Design and implement hands-on activities, assignments, and assessments that align with course objectives and help students develop skills for success in college-level academics;

* Provide individualized feedback and support to students during live sessions, office hours, and through asynchronous communication, helping students improve in areas like time management, study habits, and academic writing;

* Create an inclusive and interactive classroom environment that supports students from diverse backgrounds, encouraging active participation and engagement, and critical thinking;

* Ensure open office hours are provided, at minimum, one hour per week, allowing students to connect and discuss any concerns or assignments as needed;

* Track student progress and participation, providing constructive feedback on assignments, projects, and participation, ensuring students meet course milestones and goals;

* Guide students in completing a final project or assignment relevant to their current high school studies, applying the skills learned throughout the course;

* Actively communicate with students and, if applicable, their parents or guardians regarding progress, challenges, and strategies for success;

* Share strategies and tips to help students transition successfully to college academics, including time management, stress management, and effective research and writing techniques;

* Operate a computer, Canvas (Student Learning Management System), and other office/technological equipment to prepare instructional documents, answer email correspondence, and complete other activities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position;

* Prepare final summary report for supervisor to provide to families of the students in the program to provide insight on overall performance; and

* Perform additional duties as required.

REQUIRED

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge:

* A bachelor's degree in the subject matter being taught required, a master's degree preferred.

* Minimum of two to three years of experience working with high school or college students to enhance their academic skills in preparation for college-level work required, with experience teaching or tutoring college preparation courses preferred.

* Foundational knowledge of composition theories, pedagogy, and instructional design.

* Familiarity with online teaching platforms, preferably Canvas (required).

* Demonstrated application of Universal Design for Learning framework to curriculum development.

* Experience working with a neurodiverse student population.

Skills:

* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to collaborate effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff in person, on the phone, and over e-mail.

* Exceptional time and organizational skills with a systematic approach to managing tasks and priorities.

* Ability to deliver clear, actionable, and supportive feedback.

* Competence with instructional technology and digital learning tools.

* Skilled in diverse teaching styles, with the flexibility to accommodate individual learning styles.

Abilities:

* Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet individual student needs in diverse learning environments.

* Ability to maintain a professional and patient approach when working with students, parents, and other Beacon College community members.

* Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

* Strong ability to remain composed and maintain a clear focus during high stress situations.

* Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities with attention to detail.

* Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends may be required contingent upon departmental needs.
