Minimum Requirements- Be a high school graduate or equivalent and at least 18 years of age.
- Not have been convicted of a misdemeanor related to certification, perjury, or false statements, nor a felony or crime punishable by imprisonment of one year or more under U.S. or state law, or be dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces.
- Submit a fingerprint card to the division with a current processing fee.
- Have good moral character as determined by investigation under established procedure.
- Be in good physical condition as determined by a medical examination prescribed by the division.
- Be a non-user of tobacco or tobacco products for at least one year immediately preceding application, evidenced by a sworn affidavit.
NOTE:
All positions within this class require possession of a valid driver license.
The incumbent must obtain a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) within three months of appointment. The Florida Forest Service will cover the majority of the cost of attaining the required CDL training and the initial CDL test when administered at an agency authorized CDL training center.
Occasional to moderate travel required. Position may respond to emergencies, including natural disasters or other incidents requiring travel.
The incumbent must live within 30 miles of the headquarters at 9610 CR 44, Leesburg, Florida, throughout employment.
Certificate of Compliance as Firefighter. Florida Statute 633 requires obtaining a certification that includes satisfactory completion of an approved firefighter training program.
Applicants who receive a job offer must pass:
- Pre‑employment drug test in accordance with Section 112.0455, F.S.
- Pre‑employment physical fitness test.
Post‑employment, incumbents must pass:
- Reasonable suspicion, post‑accident, and random drug and alcohol testing provisions and the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse query requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulation, Title 49, Part 382, CFR.
- Annual medical examination (pulmonary function and blood pressure).
- Annual physical fitness test.
This work is in forest fire prevention, detection, suppression, and presuppression, providing technical forestry services and information to landowners and wood‑using industry representatives, assisting with state lands management, and presenting forestry educational programs.
Operational duties include operating and maintaining wildfire suppression equipment such as engines, bulldozers, transports, and other equipment. Investigate wildfire causes, gather evidence, interview witnesses, make recommendations, and issue notifications of violations. Perform fire detection through ground patrol or tower staffing, investigate smoke complaints, conduct on‑site inspections of burn authorizations, intensify public awareness of wildfires, perform wildfire hazard mitigation work, and support the Incident Command System.
Provide presuppression plowing and burning assistance to private landowners. Assist with timber inventory, tree seed collection, lifting and planting seedlings, and public and private forest landowner education. Participate in public lands management activities such as tree planting, timber marking, prescribed burning, boundary maintenance, and protection of threatened species. Monitor public use of state lands, maintain trails, roads, campgrounds, boat ramps, and other facilities.
Perform maintenance and construction activities on fixed facilities and equipment, and make purchases of materials as needed. Perform other related work as assigned.
