Overview
The Bus Driver Instructor is assigned to a route and provides classroom instruction, behind‑the‑wheel instruction, retraining instruction, transport van training, and third‑party CDL testing as needed. The instructor assists the Transportation Area Supervisor in training and performs operations such as operating a school bus and field observation of school bus drivers and attendants.
Roles and Responsibilities- Instruct all areas of training and staff education provided by the Division of Transportation Training Office.
- Assist in the preparation of materials for all training sessions.
- Perform field observations and ride‑along observations.
- Assist supervisors in daily school bus operations, including safe transportation of students, maintaining effective control of students, and assisting bus attendants in boarding and securing students in the bus seats.
- Assist with the Transportation In‑Service Meeting twice yearly, open house recruitment events, and public relations events.
- Provide third‑party testing for the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) as required.
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
- Experience: Four (4) years of driving experience.
- Age: Minimum age of 20.

Certifications:
Commercial Driver’s License with school bus and passenger endorsement for a minimum of 2 years in Virginia. - Knowledge of school bus operations, traffic and highway safety rules, local street and road system, and basic mechanical principles.
- Advanced level of verbal and written fluency in English.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents; carry out written and oral instructions; and operate a two‑way radio.
- Possess or be able to obtain National Safety Council First Aid and CPR Instructor Certifications within six months of hire.
- Complete DOT mandated Drug and Alcohol Suspicion Training for Supervisors within the first 90 days of employment.
- Obtain certification as a Virginia School Bus Driver Trainer and DMV Third‑Party Tester as required.
Regularly talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word; must convey instructions accurately, loudly, or quickly; normal cognitive abilities; occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds; frequently sitting or remaining in a stationary position for long periods.
