Job Summary
Under the direction of the school principal, the teacher maintains a positive learning environment where students develop critical thinking, problem solving, and lifelong learning skills. The role focuses on teaching academic and functional skills from an approved district curriculum to students with mild to moderate special needs while integrating behavior supports and social skill instruction.
Responsibilities- Teach academic and functional skills from the district‑approved curriculum for students with mild to moderate special needs.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials, providing individualized and small‑group instruction tailored to each student's needs.
- Implement effective instructional techniques across reading, language arts, mathematics, and behavior.
- Supervise and direct para educators assigned to classrooms.
- Diagnose learning difficulties and adapt or modify curriculum and instruction to meet individual student needs.
- Assess, monitor, and evaluate student progress on IEP goals and the Utah Core Curriculum.
- Apply positive behavioral supports, behavior‑management techniques, and embed social‑skills instruction into daily lessons.
- Assist in eligibility determinations, maintain file compliance, and fulfill special‑education compliance requirements.
- Communicate positively with parents and co‑workers, providing regular student progress updates.
- Must hold a Utah Special Education teaching license, an out‑of‑state Special Education teaching license, or at least a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university with an approved Associate License or enrollment in an approved statewide program.
- Required enrollment in one of the following Utah State University‑approved Special Education programs:
Weber State University, University of Utah, Utah State University, Southern Utah State University, Western Governor's University, Brigham Young University, Westminster College, Utah Tech University. - Must be in good standing with the university if enrolled.
- Must successfully enroll in an in‑state program and be approved for the Associate Educator License program within 6 months of hire; failure may jeopardize employment.
- Mild/Moderate endorsement required.
- State license copy for in‑ and out‑of‑state applicants.
- If holding an Associate License, submit the highest university degree and the AEL eligibility letter.
- If accepted into an approved program, submit the university acceptance letter.
- If only a bachelor’s degree, submit a copy of the degree.
- Preference will be given to teachers who demonstrate skill in collaboration and supporting students in general education classrooms to provide access and progress in the general curriculum.
