- Minimum of 48 core college credits or passing score of 457 on Praxis.
- Spanish‑English bilingual preferred.
- Familiarity with special needs of English Learners (EL).
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with staff, students, and the public.
- Experience with children in a school setting (classroom or one‑to‑one).
- Knowledge and skill in teaching math and reading, including phonetic pronunciation of vowels, consonants, phrases, and words.
- Willingness to learn and apply ESL methods and materials for basic language and other skills to EL students.
- Computer skills with word processing, e‑mail, spreadsheets, etc.
- Previous experience preferred, but not mandatory.
- Alternatives to the above qualifications as deemed acceptable by the Board.
To support the delivery of School District 91's curriculum and contribute to maximizing student achievement. To provide educational activities and social skills to each assigned child to improve proficiency in English and function adequately in society.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Administers WIDA Screener and ACCESS for EL tests.
- Works with classroom teacher and building administrator to determine instructional needs of each student.
- Provides services tailored to each EL student.
- Maintains required student files per federal, state, and local guidelines.
- Monitors performance with tracking sheet for all EL students.
- Observes and records EL student progress in academic and language areas.
- Modifies instructional materials as directed.
- Facilitates active participation in cooperative groups.
- Attends in‑service classes, building meetings, monthly program meetings, and district meetings.
- Assists the Federal Programs Office in gathering data needed for reporting.
- Notifies the Federal Programs Office of new students who may qualify.
- Assists schools with concerns about EL students (health, attendance, social behavior, academic problems).
- Contacts homes of EL students.
- Operates equipment such as tape recorders, VCRs, overhead projectors, copy machines.
- Assists students upon arrival and departure from tutoring area.
- Designs tutoring schedule for EL students.
- Participates as part of the staff and accepts supervision and other duties as requested.
- Provides translation and interpretation services when requested for EL students or parents.
- Explains and re‑teaches concepts to students in other languages (e.g., Spanish).
- Interprets at Parent‑Teacher Conferences for EL students.
- Constructs learning material and prepares classroom setting.
- Orders materials and supplies through the Building Administrator.
- Supervises students during recess, before school, and after school.
- Maintains high standards of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
- Has regular and predictable attendance.
- Performs all other duties as required.
This is a part‑time position scheduled for up to 19 hours per week during the school year. Wages are in accordance with the Classified Salary Schedule as Grade 5 – $16.39 or $17.19 per hour, depending on experience. Benefits are in accordance with approved Board policy.
This is an 'at will' position in that the employer or employee may terminate employment at any time or for any reason consistent with applicable state or federal law. The 'employment at will' policy cannot be changed verbally or in writing, unless the change is specifically authorized in writing and expressly approved by the Board of Trustees of District 91.
EvaluationPerformance of this position will be evaluated annually by the Building Administrator in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on the evaluation of classified personnel. This position has an overall physical classification of light duty.
