The role of Elementary Librarian is to provide support to the instructional program at the assigned elementary school, with responsibilities for collection, processing, circulation, maintenance, inventory of library materials and/or textbooks, documenting losses, monitoring procedures, implementing age‑appropriate programs for students, selecting items to support classroom instruction, and instructing students on proper use of library resources.
Media Specialists: Must complete the District's approved course of instruction within 3 years from date of employment and upon completion will receive a Certificate of Completion and salary lane advancement in accordance with the District's salary administration practices.
Essential Functions- Assists teachers, students and administrators in identifying resource materials for classroom and/or class assignments.
- Conducts classes and/or activities in reading, storytelling, puppet plays, contests, etc., to promote use and enjoyment of literature.
- Creates an inviting, attractive, and pleasing environment to support library objectives.
- Evaluates books and periodicals for retention within the collection, including repairing damage and recommending retirement.
- Maintains a materials inventory and collection of books, hardware/software, media equipment, and instructional materials.
- Manages assigned budget allocation to guide collection development.
- Monitors student activities in the Library Media Center to maintain a safe learning environment.
- Operates media production equipment and systems to provide media production services.
- Orders supplies and equipment, including subscriptions and AV materials, to support instruction and collection development.
- Oversees volunteers and aides, providing orientation, training, and ensuring assignments are completed efficiently.
- Participates in unit meetings, in‑service training, workshops to exchange necessary information.
- Performs routine maintenance and operating checks on media equipment to ensure availability.
- Performs circulation activities such as check‑in/check‑out, circulation counts, overdue item lists.
- Prepares manual and electronic documents and reports, including collection statistics, schedules, renewal information, fines, costs.
- Processes library books, periodicals, software, and media materials through barcoding, shelving, and reporting.
- Processes new student accounts and handles notices of missing, damaged, or overdue items, securing reimbursement for losses.
- Provides student enrichment experiences to encourage reading.
- Repairs books and materials to ensure availability and longevity.
- Researches instructional materials and sources for student classroom assignments.
- Responds to inquiries from students, staff, parents regarding availability, reference, and overdue fines.
- Trains students and teachers in effective technology use to enhance information retrieval.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.
