The Instructional Paraprofessional supports the instructional program within the assigned classroom, specifically assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of special needs students in the resource classroom; implementing instructional plans; monitoring student behavior during non‑classroom time; and providing clerical support to teachers and staff.
Essential Functions- Adapt classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives and IEP goals.
- Administer immediate first aid and medical assistance as directed by a health care professional (e.g., medication, tube feeding, colostomy bags, etc.) to meet students’ health care needs.
- Administer tests, homework, make‑up work, etc., to support teachers in the classroom.
- Assist with data collection under the direction of the assigned teacher to monitor student progress.
- Assist students with self‑care activities (toileting, washing, changing diapers, eating, dressing, grooming, etc.) to maintain personal hygiene.
- Assist students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments (reading stories, listening to patients read, providing writing assistance, reinforcing English lessons, providing spelling practice, facilitating activities, computer learning programs, etc.) to practice and reinforce learning concepts and help students reach academic goals and grade‑level standards.
- Attend job‑specific trainings and meetings (first aid, behavior management, etc.) to acquire and convey information related to job functions.
- Communicate with supervising instructional staff and professional support personnel to evaluate progress and/or implement IEP and/or 504 objectives.
- Demonstrate appropriate role modeling (conversation, manners, emotional support, listening skills, friendly and engaging attitudes, etc.) to guide students in developing appropriate social and interpersonal behavior.
- Implement, under the supervision of the assigned teacher, behavioral plans identified in student IEPs to reinforce learning concepts.
- Maintain instructional materials, manual and electronic files/records, classroom equipment, work area, etc. to ensure availability of items, provide written reference, and meet mandated requirements.
- Monitor students during assigned periods in various school environments (rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
- Perform a variety of clerical duties (screening phone calls, distributing materials, maintaining inventories, processing documents, etc.) to ensure efficient and effective operations.
- Provide, under the supervision of the assigned teacher, instruction to students in a variety of individual and group activities (academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, etc.) to reinforce instructional objectives, implement IEP and/or 504 plans, and ensure student success in school.
- Report observations and incidents related to specific students (accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, safety conditions, etc.) to communicate information to appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel.
- Supervise and escort students to/from classes to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
