Job DescriptionThe Family History Department (Family Search International) seeks to enable inspiring journeys that bring joy to all people as they discover, gather, and connect their family—past, present, and future.
The Business Intelligence team empowers leaders across Family Search to develop strategy and make data-informed decisions. This Data Scientist role will play a pivotal part in automating evaluations of digitized image quality and indexed records collected over many years, helping surface opportunities for improvement. The position focuses on building scalable analytical and machine-learning solutions that assess image readability, index accuracy, and process quality—ultimately guiding innovation, prioritizing investment, and ensuring long-term data reliability.
This is a full-time, benefitted position. It is not a remote role
; candidates must be available to work onsite at our Lehi, Utah office 4–5 days per week.
- Work with structured and unstructured data from multiple sources to build strategic data models and machine-learning solutions that deepen insights and address business problems.
- Develop machine-learning models or analytical processes to evaluate large volumes of genealogical record data based on business-defined quality standards, categorize results, and recommend the scope and scale of remediation efforts.
- Communicate, interpret, and visualize analytical findings for department leadership.
- Define data sources, data capture methods, and data flow requirements.
- Ensure usability, statistical validity, and proper modeling/structuring of data, including aggregation logic.
- Deliver data where needed for predictive modeling, machine-learning algorithms, forecasting, and statistical analyses.
- Create actionable reporting and dashboards based on business requirements, enabling leaders to make informed decisions.
- BS/BA degree in data science, mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a Data Scientist or in a closely related role.
- Intermediate proficiency with Python, R, and SQL; familiarity with Scala or Java preferred.
- Experience with business intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) and modern data frameworks.
- Understanding of machine learning techniques and operations research principles.
- Ability to work with minimal to moderate oversight while meeting established deadlines.
- Strong problem solving and debugging skills, including designing and implementing solutions to complex technical issues.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and within a collaborative team environment.
- Demonstrated curiosity and a commitment to applying scientific methodology to learning and discovery.
