Job Description

This job description applies to Nurse Manager and Nurse Manager-Complex. It involves managing and supervising one or more nursing departments, collaborating with nursing leaders and other facility managers to ensure excellent patient care, achieve financial objectives, and foster leadership development. The focus is on developing departmental structure, processes, and outcome standards. Job duties are distributed as follows: 50% tactical (day-to-day activities such as staffing and equipment availability), 40% operational (budget management, supply acquisition, employee performance evaluations), and 10% strategic (developing goals to meet the Intermountain/Regional Strategic Plan and holding employees accountable).

Scope
  • Level 1 Nurse Manager
    :
    Manages less than 50 headcount or one department operating Monday through Friday.
  • Level 2 Nurse Manager-Complex
    :
    Manages more than 50 headcount or more than two departments and oversees operations 24/7.

Responsibilities
  • Champion the use of available resources to ensure nursing care is efficient, effective, safe, and delivered with compassion.
  • Facilitate collaborative decision-making and uphold professional independence by contributing departmental perspectives to executive decisions.
  • Assist with development, implementation, and management of annual capital/operating and personnel budgets; use resources effectively to meet financial goals.
  • Model and foster an environment of professionalism and employee engagement on the unit.
  • Ensure competent staffing levels, including hiring, orientation, retention, and employee satisfaction.
  • Support ongoing competency verification and provide mentorship and professional educational opportunities.
  • Evaluate staff competency through performance and peer reviews.
  • Coordinate compliance with patient safety initiatives and regulatory bodies such as Joint Commission, OSHA, CMS, and others.
  • Facilitate use of expanded role nursing staff, nurse practitioners, and specialty roles.
  • Serve as an exemplary figure, promoting Healing Commitments and Healing Connections.
  • Monitor and improve patient satisfaction using metrics and national benchmarks to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Partner with physicians to achieve clinical, operational, and service goals.
  • Support the Nurse Director in overseeing student nurses and facilitating their activities.
  • Encourage staff participation in community organizations such as volunteer clinics, health fairs, and advisory boards.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution (degree verified).
  • Current nursing license in the state of practice; compact licenses must be transferred within 60 days.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers.
  • Leadership/supervisory experience.
  • Completion of Intermountain Health’s required leadership training within one year.
  • Two years of clinical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience in oversight roles.
Physical Requirements
  • Visual and auditory acuity to see, read, and interpret information and alarms.
  • Manual dexterity for complex equipment and frequent computer use.
  • Ability to lift, transfer, and move patients and supplies, including heavy items.
  • Capacity to walk and assist with patient transportation and equipment handling.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods when required.
