Job Summary

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine is seeking a Clinical Nurse to serve as a member of the Pediatric Gastroenterology team at the Primary Children’s Hospital Lehi campus. The team consists of 10 RNs working with 4 NPs and 20 MDs. The role involves delivering professional nursing care to patients via in-person, phone, or patient portal.

This includes assessing patient status, implementing clinical nursing interventions, developing and evaluating patient care plans, educating patients and families, and ensuring a safe therapeutic environment.

This position is located at the Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital Miller Campus (2250 North Miller Campus Drive, Lehi, UT 84043) with occasional travel to Primary Children’s Hospital Eccles Outpatient Building, Salt Lake City, UT. The position requires on‑site presence at least three days per week and may accommodate a hybrid telework schedule after initial training.

Responsibilities
  • Perform phone management with patients’ parents, chart review, care coordination, triage, and problem management.
  • Discuss patient and family concerns in person/over the phone and/or via the electronic health record.
  • Provide and develop patient/family education materials surrounding common gastroenterology disorders; communicate education best practices to reduce future messages.
  • Communicate adjustments in treatment plan to families.
  • Formulate care plans for specific patients and document the nursing process in the patient’s record.
  • Evaluate patient response to interventions and modify plan of care as needed to achieve healthcare goals; communicate adjustments or changes in treatment plans to patient/family.
  • Develop and participate in educating patients and their families about care programs.
  • Communicate lab and other test results to families.
  • Provide medication refills.
  • Assist providers and staff with patient‑related paperwork such as letters of medical necessity, DMV forms, school care plans, and preauthorization.
  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic patient care environment.
  • Work closely with the triage team and gastroenterology staff to provide high‑quality, efficient care to patients and families.
  • Keep current on advances in nursing care by participating in educational programs.
  • Orient and educate new staff in nursing techniques and departmental procedures.
  • Utilize knowledge of medications, procedures, infection control, and safety precautions, and initiate appropriate interventions in crisis situations.
  • Participate in total quality management to positively affect patient and system outcomes to improve care.

The above responsibilities will be shared with other nurses and medical assistants in the Department. The incumbent will provide high‑quality patient care focused on safety, satisfaction, and positive outcomes; advocate for patients and families; collaborate with highly skilled team members; and actively participate in educational opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system, to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency.
  • Maintain a current Interstate Compact (multi‑state) license if residency is not being changed to Utah.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Additional certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within one year of hire.
  • Strong organizational skills and effective communication.
  • Familiarity with GI diagnoses and/or procedures.
  • Previous nursing experience.
  • Previous pediatrics experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
