Pay Range: $20.73 - $36.12 depending on certifications and experience (starting rate typically not above the mid‑point of the range).

  • Water Operator 1 – Distribution Grade 1, 0–1 years experience, pay $20.73 – $29.01
  • Water Operator 2 – Distribution Grade 2, 2 years experience, pay $21.76 – $31.55
  • Water Operator 3 – Distribution Grade 3, 4 years experience, pay $23.50 – $34.08
  • Water Operator 4 – Distribution Grade 4, 8 years experience, pay $24.91 – $36.12

Job Summary

Performs a variety of apprentice‑level, complex technical duties related to coordinating and affecting the culinary and pressurized irrigation water metering system, including instrument and equipment installation, maintenance, repair, and accurate reporting of water usage for all customers. Works under close supervision of the Water Meters & Compliance Supervisor.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Respond to the public on various complaints related to culinary and pressurized irrigation water metering (high bills), service irregularities, application and enforcement of various rate schedules or different classes of customers.
  • Advise and recommend to developers or contractors on location and finished grade of culinary water boxes, setter, and pressurized irrigation box before the culinary water meter is installed.
  • Perform final inspection.
  • Maintain inventory of instruments, meters, related equipment, materials, and supplies; responsible for care, condition, and use of materials, equipment, and tools related to the culinary water system.
  • Perform related duties as required:
    • Install culinary water meters and MXU units for commercial, industrial and residential use.
    • Conduct a variety of maintenance testing and repair on culinary water instruments, including pressure and volume test meters, leak detection equipment, MXU installation and repair devices.
    • Test and maintain equipment to determine cause of meter malfunction.
    • Test large meters on site, smaller meters in the shop.
    • Obtain work order; find proper addresses; conduct pressure and volume metering test in response to customer complaints.
    • Perform field meter installations and repairs; locate and correct causes of service disruption; terminate water service due to unpaid accounts.
    • Install fixtures, master shut‑off valve; install and maintain meters and related connections.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • A. Graduation from high school.
  • B. Four (4) years’ experience in drainage, irrigation, water or wastewater operations.
  • OR
  • C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of instruments, equipment, and tools used in water meter system operations, maintenance, and construction; principles of maintenance; OSHA safety standards; EPA water standards; state and federal regulations; water sampling methods; interpersonal communication skills; understanding of water distribution networks; hand and power tools; traffic control; typical water line problems.
  • Some skill in operating SCADA equipment and alarms; operating heavy mechanized equipment (computer, GIS tools, backhoe, skid‑steer, air compressor, tap machine, grinders, welders, saws, jack hammer, etc.).
  • Ability to adapt to emergencies, tolerate weather extremes, analyze water systems, communicate effectively, perform strenuous manual labor, and develop working relationships; lift 75 lbs.

3. SPECIAL

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess a valid Utah CDL within twelve (12) months of hiring.
  • Must obtain certification as a Level 1 Water Distribution Operator within twelve (12) months of hiring.
  • Must be confined‑space certified within twelve (12) months of hiring.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Regular exposure to unpleasant or hazardous conditions caused by water, noise, dust, heavy equipment, toxic fumes, traffic, heights, high‑voltage equipment, trench work, vaults. Outdoor work in all weather. On‑call status on a rotating basis. Seasonal shift work, including weekends and holidays, may be required. Hepatitis A & B immunization is required.
