GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs fleet operations and advanced journeyman‑level mechanical duties for the Solid Waste Department—including diagnostics, welding, fabrication, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of fleet vehicles and equipment—while promoting a safe work environment and providing technical leadership and mentoring to maintenance personnel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Maintenance Technician I - $31.15/hr- Performs preventive maintenance services including lubrication, fluid changes, filter replacement, inspections, and routine servicing.
- Assists with repairs on refuse trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, and fleet vehicles.
- Performs tire service, battery replacement, brake inspections, and minor repairs.
- Assists with welding, fabrication, and equipment modifications under supervision.
- Learns diagnostic procedures and operation of maintenance equipment.
- Maintains shop cleanliness and proper housekeeping standards.
- Completes work orders and maintenance documentation accurately.
- Assists with emergency repairs and field service activities as directed.
- Complies with all county safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, PPE requirements, and OSHA regulations.
- Participates in safety meetings and required training programs.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Utah Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with in 12 months of employment.
- Technical training in diesel mechanics, automotive technology, or a related field preferred.
- One (1) year of mechanical maintenance experience preferred.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Diagnoses and repairs diesel engines, brake systems, steering, suspension, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
- Utilizes diagnostic software, scan tools, and service manuals to identify mechanical and electrical issues.
- Performs component replacement and repair of drivetrain, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
- Conducts welding and fabrication projects to support fleet operations.
- Performs field service repairs and responds to emergency breakdowns.
- Maintains repair records, work orders, and maintenance documentation.
- Assists in training and mentoring Maintenance Technician I employees.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and maintenance standards.
- Working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and fleet maintenance practices.
- Ability to diagnose and repair moderate to complex mechanical failures.
- Ability to read wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, and technical manuals.
- Skilled in welding, fabrication, and equipment repair.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Valid Utah Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL)
- Two (2) years of technical coursework in diesel mechanics, heavy equipment technology, or related field preferred.
- Four (4) years of experience in diesel mechanics, heavy equipment maintenance, hydraulic systems, or fleet operations.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Performs advanced diagnostics and repairs on semi‑trucks, trailers, refuse collection equipment, heavy equipment, and fleet vehicles.
- Conducts troubleshooting of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, CAN bus networks, and ECM‑controlled systems.
- Performs engine overhauls, rebuilds, and major component repairs.
- Uses advanced diagnostic software, OEM service information, and scan tools.
- Performs welding and fabrication using ARC, MIG, and oxy‑acetylene equipment.
- Provides technical guidance and mentorship to technicians and apprentices.
- Supports field repairs and emergency fleet response activities.
- Ensures compliance with county, state, federal, and safety regulations.
- Advanced knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, welding, and fabrication.
- Expert understanding of CAN bus communications, ECM diagnostics, and electronic troubleshooting.
- Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, and technical manuals.
- Strong leadership, communication, and customer service skills.
