FLEET APPRENTICE MECHANIC

Pay Range: $18.04 - $25.26 depending on experience and qualifications, with starting wage not typically above the mid-point of the range ($21.65)

Responsible for apprentice-level maintenance and repair work on vehicles and equipment. Your duties include repairing brakes, exhausts and related components, tuning engines, changing and repairing tires, changing oil, lubricating, and related preventive maintenance. You will make standard vehicle and equipment maintenance decisions in accordance with established procedures, ensuring safe and effective maintenance and routine repair of vehicles, light trucks, roads and grounds equipment, and police vehicles.
This position requires good knowledge, skill, and ability in vehicle and equipment maintenance and routine repair. You will work under the general supervision of the Fleet Shop Lead as a team lead and the Fleet Manager as the Supervisor.
- Diagnose and identify vehicle and equipment malfunctions and determine corrective actions through tests and inspections. Test vehicles and equipment after repairs, verify repair completion to ensure quality service is deliverable.
- Repair brakes, exhausts and related components as assigned. Tune engines. Perform routine repairs to automobiles and trucks as assigned. Assist Fleet Mechanic I and II and/or Fleet Mechanic Crew Leader in more difficult repairs or repairs to heavy equipment.
- Repair or overhaul engines, transmissions, gear trains, differentials, steering/brake/clutch/electrical systems, power takeoffs, hydraulic and pneumatic lifts and controls and related components. Perform vehicle and equipment maintenance.
- Brazes or welds sheet metal and various equipment components such as hoppers and plows.
- Perform state inspections, routine and preventive maintenance if current certifications are in order.
- Perform preventative maintenance, in-service inspections, and field operational evaluations as necessary.
- May change and repair tires as necessary.
- Work in a safe manner and observe all safety procedures.
- Use all tools, equipment, and materials responsibly and perform basic inspection and preventive maintenance prior to use.
- Complete job or shift report form as assigned.
- Perform electronic data entry of vehicle and equipment repair information through a Computerized Maintenance Management System.

Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school.
- Currently enrolled in a Vocational/Technical School eligible to participate in a Co-op program. Proof of enrollment will be required.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the tools, equipment and methods of vehicle and equipment overhaul and repair.
- Skill in the use of mechanic's tools.
- Ability to perform vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair safely, effectively and efficiently.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and co‑workers.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to learn City procedures. Good oral communication ability.
- Good ability to complete forms and charts.

Qualifications:
- Must be able to move objects weighing up to 80 lbs.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
4. Work Environment:
- Ability to stand for a minimum of 1 up to 10 hours, walk for a minimum of 1 up to 10 hours and drive for a minimum of 1 up to 10 hours per workday.
- Ability to bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, lift and push/pull for up to 68% of the workday.
- Ability to climb, crawl and reach above shoulder level for up to 35% of the workday.
- Ability to use both feet for operating foot controls of equipment.
- Ability to use both hands for simple grasping, firm grasping and fine manipulation of tools, equipment and objects.
- Ability to perform job functions using safety precautions around moving machinery.
- Ability to perform job functions using safety precautions where environmental conditions may be challenging.
- Ability to drive an automobile.
