Job Description
The Salt Lake Tribune made history four years ago as the first legacy newspaper in the U.S. to transform from a for-profit company to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. That innovative step was just one part of changing how we reach all Utahns. In order to better serve our audiences statewide, it’s vital that we improve our analytics capabilities.
The Salt Lake Tribune is seeking a talented Data Engineer to join our product team and play a crucial role in enhancing our data infrastructure. As a Data Engineer, you will be responsible for integrating various data sources from vendors into Snowflake, performing data modeling, and implementing ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) transformations. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of journalism and technology, enabling data-driven decision-making and enhancing our digital offerings.
Key Responsibilities- Design and implement data pipelines to connect and integrate diverse data sources into Snowflake.
- Develop and maintain scalable ETL processes for transforming raw data into a structured format suitable for analysis and reporting.
- Collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams including data analysts, journalists, and product managers to understand data requirements and deliver solutions.
- Perform data modeling to optimize storage and retrieval processes within Snowflake.
- Ensure data quality and reliability by implementing data validation and monitoring strategies.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to data integration, ETL processes, and performance bottlenecks.
- Document data pipelines, data flows, and processes to maintain transparency and facilitate knowledge sharing.

Skills andRequired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience.
- Proven experience as a Data Engineer or in a similar role, with a focus on data integration and ETL development.
- Strong proficiency in SQL and experience with Snowflake or similar cloud data warehouse platforms.
- Experience with data modeling techniques (star schema, snowflake schema) and data warehousing concepts.
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Perl, or Bash for automation and ETL workflows.
- Familiarity with data governance, data security, and compliance best practices.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex data issues.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and explain technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
- Experience working in a media organization or with digital content platforms.
- Familiarity with journalism workflows and content management systems.
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and version control systems (e.g., Git).
- Understanding of scalable cloud infrastructure and services (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
- Knowledge of React , as we’ll want help with implementing the tagging of the data analytics platform, if possible.
- Working with integrations:
Salesforce, email marketing platforms and registration systems. Knowledge specifically of Iterable and Piano would be ideal
