Associate Manager – Backend Engineering Leadership

nCino’s Automated Underwriting System team builds and maintains the integrations between Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that enable financial institutions to assess loan risk and prepare files for the secondary market. As Associate Manager you will lead a backend‑heavy engineering team, balancing leadership with senior‑level engineering, while contributing hands‑on code.

• Lead a backend‑heavy engineering team; manage day‑to‑day execution of projects.
• Provide hands‑on support as a senior contributor, writing code in Ruby on Rails on the backend and Vue.js on the frontend.
• Improve team processes, collaboration, and code quality, ensuring best practices are followed to enhance maintainability, performance, and scalability.
• Delegate work assignments, set deadlines, verify accuracy, and support the daily activities of team members.
• Assist in hiring, performance management, and professional development of staff.
• Leverage AI tools and techniques to enhance software development activities, including code generation, testing, debugging, and optimization.
• Apply AI insights to identify patterns, automate repetitive tasks, and improve overall development efficiency and product quality.
• Evaluate and integrate AI/ML capabilities to strengthen product functionality and user experience.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field with 6+ years of relevant experience and 1+ year of management experience (or equivalent combination).
• Proficiency in at least one major programming language.
• Understanding of software engineering principles, including system design, architecture, and development practices.
• Experience in a fast‑paced development environment focused on improving development practices and processes.
• Proven success as a coach and mentor of technical staff.
• Demonstrated dedication to quality and continuous improvement.
• Ability to motivate yourself and others, prioritize work, and adapt in a dynamic team environment.
• Excellent problem‑solving, decision‑making, and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills for technical and non‑technical audiences.

• Experience with client‑side JavaScript frameworks such as Vue, Angular, React, or Knockout.
• Experience with Ruby on Rails.
• Understanding or exposure to AWS tools and development.
• Agile software development experience.
