Full Time / 37 Hours Per Week / Permanent Do you have a passion for working in the construction industry and would like to become a valuable member of the Highways Maintenance Service? The Highways Maintenance Service maintains and repairs over 500 miles of road and 800 miles of footpaths within Leicester City. We undertake construction of major public realm schemes to improve the pedestrian and transport network within the City Centre, as well as providing winter service and gully cleaning services in the city.

Join us as either a Skilled or Semi-Skilled Street mason Improver to work with a team of highway professionals, carrying out general manual/ labouring and paving tasks involved in the construction, maintenance and repair of highways, sewers, and watercourses. You'll assist with the construction, maintenance, and repair of the highway infrastructure - roads, footpaths, and drainage features, lay paving materials and tarmac.

Based at our offices at 90 Leycroft Road, you'll work on site anywhere within the city and occasionally further afield. This is a full‑time permanent role, working 37 hours per week. Hours of work are 7.30am - 3.30pm, Monday to Thursday and 7.30am - 3.00pm on Fridays. However, you must be willing to work overtime to suit the operational needs of the unit, e.g. additional weekday hours and weekend working.

You'll also be required to work on the City Highways out of hours standby rota, which typically requires you to work with another member of the team for one week (Friday to Friday) in every 4 or 5 weeks (depending how many staff are on the rota). You'll be required to respond to any highway related call outs after hours during the week, at weekends and on Bank Holidays.

A driving licence is desirable but not essential for this role. This is a career graded post (LG Band 4 to LG Band
5). Appointment to a level will depend on the outcome of the selection process and experience of the successful candidate. Dependent on availability of work/ vacancy at the higher level, progress will be by satisfactory performance, agreed at annual appraisals and through on‑going supervision.

You’ll work closely in a team and under the guidance of the Site Team Leader and/ or Supervisor to lay paving products such as slabs, kerbs, blocks, concrete paving, and natural stone in designated areas of the city. You’ll confidently use power-assisted tools, minor plant and machinery as well as drive, clean and carry out routine maintenance of vehicles and plant.

You’ll plan and prioritise work activities to ensure the productivity targets are achieved, whilst ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements such as Health & Safety and Works Specifications.

You’ll have experience as a Street mason or in another similar role in construction industry with a good understanding of health, safety and environmental requirements and safe working procedures. You’ll have working knowledge of construction specifications, materials, compaction, and workmanship requirements in different disciplines. You’ll be able to follow instructions and complete relevant paperwork such as timesheets and worksheets. Using good communication and interpersonal skills, you’ll be able to deal effectively with customers as well as work colleagues.
