The Roger Bacon Academy, located in Leland, NC, operates multiple award‑winning public charter schools. We are seeking Exceptional Children Teachers for our Classical Charter Schools of Leland (grades K–8).
Teachers are paid based on the North Carolina State Salary Scale for Bachelor’s Degrees and may be eligible for an additional Teacher Supplement.
Exceptional Children Teacher– Job Responsibilities
- Develop and implement instructional plans compatible with the school‑wide curricular goals and the students’ Individual Education Plan.
- Develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities; update IEPs as needed using diagnostic information from tests and other assessments.
- Provide direct special education instruction to identified students.
- Employ a variety of teaching methods to meet student needs; adapt or develop materials as required.
- Monitor student behavior, maintain discipline, deescalate inappropriate behaviors, teach appropriate behavioral strategies, and, if certified, restrain students when necessary and record restraints.
- Assist disabled students with personal and self‑help needs such as eating and toileting.
- Communicate with parents regarding their children’s educational progress via periodic written progress reports.
- Act as a case manager for assigned students; consult with community caregivers, school support professionals, and parents to better understand and meet student needs.
- Maintain student records in accordance with North Carolina’s Procedures Governing Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities and comply with state and federal education statutes.
- Treat all students fairly and equitably, interacting effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and the community.
- Follow a plan for professional development and demonstrate evidence of growth.
Other Duties:
The position reports to the Headmaster or their designee and is a 10‑month role following the school academic calendar.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in education and a valid North Carolina teaching certificate for the applicable subject area (alternatives may be considered).
- Physical requirements:
Must operate various classroom equipment, be able to lift or carry up to 10 lbs., and perform light walking or standing. - Data conception:
Ability to compare and judge characteristics of data, people or things. - Interpersonal communication:
Ability to speak, listen, and exchange information with others. - Language ability:
Read a variety of documents and prepare correspondence and reports in prescribed formats. - Must be adaptable to working under stress and facing emergency situations, including:
- Constantly monitor students’ safety and well‑being, especially during inclusive activities.
- Motivate students.
- Maintain a clean and orderly environment.
- Perform clerical duties and maintain basic files and records.
- Operate common office machines and understand oral and written directions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships as required.
- Physically lift and carry up to 20 lbs. with dexterity to perform job duties.
