WASTEWATER UTILITY WORKER I & WASTEWATER UTILITY WORKER II

DEFINITIONTo perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance activities on wastewater facilities; to operate and maintain a wide variety of maintenance tools and equipment; and to perform a variety of maintenance duties relative to assigned area of responsibility.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Wastewater Utility Worker IThis is the entry level class in the Wastewater Utility Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Wastewater Utility Worker II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including less complex maintenance and repair activities. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.
WastewaterUtility Worker II
This is the full journey level class within the Wastewater Utility Worker series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Wastewater Utility Worker I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level, or when filled from the outside, have prior experience. Advancement to Wastewater Utility Worker II is at the discretion of the Wastewater CPO and approval of Human Resources.
Receives immediate supervision from the Wastewater Collection Coordinator or any higher level Wastewater division staff.
Wastewater Utility Worker IIReceives general supervision from the Wastewater Collection Coordinator or any higher level wastewater division staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTSEssential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Methods and techniques of general maintenance and repair related to vehicles and wastewater maintenance.
- Operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in the maintenance of City vehicles and wastewater treatment systems.
- Basic principles and practices of mechanical repair and preventive maintenance.
- Shop tools and automotive maintenance equipment used in repairs.
- Basic principles and practices of wastewater operations.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
- Learn operation and repair characteristics of a wide variety of vehicles, equipment, pipes and facilities used in the City.
- Learn to utilize tools, equipment and procedures used in the welding and fabrication of vehicles, equipment, pipes and facilities.
- Learn to perform semi-skilled and skilled welding and fabrication activities.
- Learn to systematically perform preventive maintenance.
- Operate and maintain wastewater facilities.
- Read and interpret gauges and other recording devices related to wastewater operations.
- Take samples and perform routine laboratory tests.
- Attend and complete confined space entry training.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
