Police Instructor, Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center - Hutchinson Campus
Hutchinson Campus consists of 173 acres with fifteen buildings, including two multi‑story residential student dormitories. The campus is home to the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC), a unit of the University of Kansas. KLETC manages a $12 million annual budget, 65 authorized FTE staff and over 400 contract/adjunct staff, and trains nearly 15,000 students each year in residential, online, and outreach programs across Kansas.

Position OverviewThe Police Instructor assists in, and may be responsible for, instruction of students in basic, advanced and specialized law enforcement classes, courses, seminars and workshops conducted by KLETC. The instructor develops curriculum and learning objectives for general police subjects and instructs basic training and in‑service training classes at KLETC and outreach sites.
Job Description60% Instruction of students in basic, advanced and specialized law enforcement classes, courses, seminars, and workshops at KLETC and outreach sites across Kansas. This includes utilizing diverse instructional methodologies, researching and developing practical training exercises, attending advanced training classes, maintaining general knowledge of all areas of law enforcement, and providing academic counseling services.
25% Curriculum Development:
Responsible for development of curricula, learning objectives, lesson plans, and handouts for all certified and authorized basic law enforcement training academy programs in Kansas. Conduct research, design new curricula, review current curriculum, develop test items, and initiate content changes.
10% Recruitment & Training:
Recruit, train, and schedule law enforcement officers; assist agencies with training programs, hiring, and promotional interview processes; provide reports on training equipment, inventory, maintenance, facility, budgetary, and personnel needs; and possess ability to instruct firearms, emergency vehicle operation, physical defense tactics, vehicle stops, and practical officer survival training.
5% Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements- Valid Kansas driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire.
- Bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
- Five years of increasingly responsible experience as a full‑time, state or federal certified law enforcement officer.
- Effective written communication skills as evidenced in application materials.
- Proof of education in the form of an official transcript from an institution accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
- Bachelor’s degree specifically in adult education or an academic discipline related to law enforcement from an institution accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
- Post‑bachelor’s degree, or progress toward such degree, in an academic discipline related to adult education or law enforcement from an institution accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
- Ten years or more of full‑time experience as a state of Kansas certified law enforcement officer.
- Experience in the training, education, and/or instruction of adults, as evidenced in application materials.
- Experience as a law enforcement instructor in a law enforcement training academy or college setting, as evidenced in application materials.
