General Position Description

The Preschool Assistant Teacher supports the Lead Teacher in creating a structured and engaging learning environment for children ages 3-5. This role focuses on fostering independence, creativity, and social-emotional development while assisting in implementing curriculum, supervising activities, and maintaining a safe and nurturing classroom. The Preschool Assistant Teacher collaborates with the Lead Teacher and Center Director to ensure a positive experience for preschoolers and their families.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Assist in implementing developmentally appropriate lessons and activities that encourage early literacy, numeracy, problem-solving, and creativity.

  • Engage with preschoolers during structured learning, playtime, and group activities to support cognitive, social, and emotional growth.

  • Help maintain a consistent daily schedule, guiding children through transitions such as circle time, meals, rest, and outdoor play.

  • Support children in developing self-help skills, such as dressing, toileting, and cleaning up after meals and activities.

  • Supervise and assist in resolving peer interactions, encouraging cooperative play and positive communication.

  • Observe and document children’s progress and behaviors, providing input to the Lead Teacher on individual needs.

  • Ensure a clean, safe, and organized classroom environment, following health, hygiene, and safety regulations.

  • Communicate with parents as needed, supporting a positive connection between school and home.

  • Follow all center policies, licensing regulations, and confidentiality standards.

  • Attend staff meetings, required training, and professional development opportunities.

  • Step in to support the Lead Teacher or cover the classroom when necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Understanding of preschool child development, including early learning milestones and school readiness skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, children, and families in a supportive role.

  • Patience, enthusiasm, and strong communication skills to engage young learners effectively.

Education & Experience
  • Experience working with preschool-aged children in a group setting preferred.

  • Working towards or willing to obtain CDA credential or degree in Early Childhood Education.

  • Certification in pediatric first aid and CPR.

  • Pass criminal background check and health assessment (including negative TB test).

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to engage in active play, including standing, bending, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

  • Comfortable working in a dynamic environment with exposure to common childhood illnesses.
