Job Overview
Mechanical Project Development Engineer is part of Building Technology & Solutions business at Johnson Controls. The role leads a development team on large, complex, high-risk projects, supporting sales teams by identifying opportunities and serving as a technical expert. The Engineer conducts needs assessments of potential customers, leads estimating, engineering, process, and financial tasks during project development, designs Building HVACR systems, and travels with sales teams to present projects to customers.
Responsibilities- Lead development of large, complex, high-risk projects, coordinating with sales, operations, and estimation teams.
- Conduct needs assessments of potential customers and develop business cases for conceptual solutions.
- Lead or support detailed estimating of projects, building cost estimates and scope of work.
- Validate assumptions made during project design or proposal phase and perform high‑level analysis of sales components.
- Prepare proposals and other customer communication documents.
- Participate in transition meetings with Operations and Sales to ensure project scope, objectives, timeline, and customer requirements are properly understood.
- Assist in technical or financial benchmarking and develop cost baselines.
- Collect on‑site data at customer facilities to support estimating tasks.
- Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers, vendors, and facility managers.
- Remain current with relevant estimating and development standards and practices.
- Provide post‑contract design review support and job cost analysis as required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum six years of experience in building systems, operational processes, design‑build construction, and HVAC (highly preferred).
- Strong analytical capabilities and ability to manage tasks associated with project development.
- Experience with estimating, analysis, and project development tools.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills and comfort with customer‑facing interactions.
- Solid computer skills with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).
- Professional engineering license or relevant certifications preferred (e.g., FE, HVAC certification).
- Leadership and teamwork ability.
- Commitment to Johnson Controls safety policies.
Salary range: $89,000 to $134,000. Includes a competitive bonus plan and a comprehensive benefits package (401(k), medical, dental, vision, paid vacation, etc.).
