Controls & Automation Engineer

Overview

Sirius Staffing is seeking an experienced Controls & Automation Engineer for a 12-month contract opportunity in Lenexa, KS.

This role is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, programming, and optimizing industrial control systems within a manufacturing environment. The ideal candidate will have strong experience with Rockwell Automation (Allen-Bradley) PLC platforms, HMI/SCADA systems, and industrial automation technologies. This position supports production reliability, implements automation improvements, and minimizes equipment downtime.

• Maintain, troubleshoot, and modify PLC programs using Rockwell Automation (Allen-Bradley) platforms, including Control Logix, Compact Logix, and Micro Logix.
• Program and support PLCs using Studio 5000 and RSLogix 5000 software.
• Configure, troubleshoot, and maintain HMI/SCADA systems, including Factory Talk View SE/ME, Ignition, or similar platforms.
• Support the complete lifecycle of automation projects from concept, design, installation, commissioning, startup, and handoff to operations.
• Diagnose and resolve PLC, electrical, instrumentation, networking, and control system issues to minimize production downtime.
• Develop and maintain technical documentation including electrical schematics, P&IDs, control narratives, wiring diagrams, and programming standards.
• Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and production teams to improve equipment reliability, efficiency, quality, and safety.
• Perform preventative maintenance audits on automation and control systems while recommending system improvements.
• Provide technical support for critical manufacturing systems, including occasional on-site or on-call support as needed.
• Train maintenance technicians and production personnel on equipment operation, PLC systems, and basic troubleshooting procedures.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA, ISA/IEC, and company engineering standards.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on productivity, reliability, and process optimization.

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
• 3–5 years of hands-on industrial automation or controls engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Required experience with Rockwell Automation (Allen-Bradley) PLC platforms, including:
  • Control Logix
  • Compact Logix
  • Micro Logix
• Experience programming using:
  • Studio 5000
  • RSLogix 5000
• Experience with HMI/SCADA platforms such as:
  • Factory Talk View
  • Ignition
  • Wonderware (or similar)
• Strong understanding of industrial networking protocols, including:
  • Ether Net/IP
  • Device Net
  • Profibus
  • Modbus
• Ability to read and interpret:
  • Electrical schematics
  • Wiring diagrams
  • Mechanical drawings
  • P&IDs
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

• Rockwell Automation Certified Logix Designer (CLD)
• Experience with ISA-88 Batch Control Systems
• Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES)
• ERP integration (SAP preferred)
• Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma experience
• Process manufacturing experience in:
  • Food & Beverage
  • Chemical Manufacturing
  • Packaging
  • Pharmaceutical or Life Sciences
• Industrial Control Systems (ICS) cybersecurity knowledge
