PBMC Specialty Lab Technician
The PBMC Specialty Lab Technician performs sample processing under the guidance and support of the Specialty Lab Director. The PBMC Specialty Lab Technician will follow all laboratory policies and procedures while maintaining accurate data reporting practices to ensure consistent and diligent execution of specimen processing. The PBMC Specialty Lab Technician position will be responsible for conducting complex laboratory techniques such as isolation and cryopreservation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC).
The PBMC Specialty Lab Technician position reports to the Specialty Lab Director.
Position Responsibilities
- Completes tasks assigned to the Specialty Lab Department, as needed
- Receives and prepares CMI samples for PBMC processing and cryopreservation
- Assures correct samples are collected for each subject visit
- Verifies specimen documentation, including requisition, is complete and correct
- Examines specimens for adequacy and appropriateness
- Captures specimen data electronically and enters information accurately
- Maintains a clean and organized work area while keeping specific areas sanitized
- Labels and prepares specimen aliquots
- Uses aseptic technique, following study specific protocol procedures, while processing PBMC samples
- Utilizes centrifuges, pipettes, biological safety cabinet, various freezer storage units
- Follows instructions carefully completing tasks in an organized manner with attention to detail
- Maintains accurate logs documenting sample processing procedures
- Records reagents used in processing and monitors expiration and use by dates
- Reviews protocol information to ensure accuracy when working with specific study related specimens
- Prepares and ships laboratory samples to central labs and biorepositories following IATA guidelines
- Obtains and maintains IATA shipping certification
- Creates sample shipping manifests and emails to appropriate sample reception staff
- Complies with applicable laws and regulations
- Assists staff with query resolution regarding specimen documentation and processing
- Works directly with Specialty Lab Director to ensure the accuracy and workflow of the department
- Participates in sponsor mandated PBMC certification/qualification sample processing and submission
- Completes sponsor provided training, as required
- Assists in inventory and monitoring of supplies
- Manages change effectively as it happens
- Reads, understands, and follows applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), including safety and quality procedures
- Participates in improving lab efficiency, quality and cooperation
- Works with staff to ensure study related activities are completed according to FDA regulations
- Maintains compliance with ICH/GCP standards
Experience and Skills
- Experience in customer service, telephone, and computers or equivalent training
- Microsoft Office proficiency
- Good communication skills required, both written and verbal
- Proficient typing and data entry skills
- Ability to work effectively with a team
- Ability to manage small projects personally and work independently
- Memory to retain information and know where to research answers
- Time management skills
- Organizational skills
- Detail oriented with the ability to perform at a high level of accuracy
- Exceptionally legible handwriting

Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and use hands along with fingers, to handle or feel
- Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 60 pounds
- Ability to handle biological materials
- Dexterous and able to handle toxic and caustic chemicals safely
- Resilient to allergens such as fumes
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in science or related discipline preferred
- 1-2 years of work experience in a laboratory or similar environment
- Familiarity with or ability to learn clinical trial management system software
