Laboratory Assistant II – Full-Time

Job Summary

Responsible for performing a variety of laboratory support procedures in assigned laboratory areas, including phlebotomy, specimen collection, specimen processing, and laboratory support functions within clinical and anatomical pathology. This position supports accurate and timely processing of specimens for testing and analysis while maintaining compliance with quality, safety, regulatory, and departmental standards. The role contributes to efficient laboratory operations through customer service, equipment maintenance, inventory management, clerical support, employee training, and continuing education requirements.

Essential Functions

  • Performs specimen collection activities, including venipuncture and capillary blood collection, according to established laboratory procedures.

  • Collects patient, physician, and test order information to establish and maintain accurate patient records.

  • Verifies patient identification, insurance information, credentials, and testing requirements.

  • Receives, labels, processes, centrifuges, aliquots, stores, and transports patient specimens according to established laboratory procedures.

  • May perform point-of-care testing, including quality control, maintenance, troubleshooting, documentation, and result reporting.

  • May perform blood and blood component processing, storage, shipping, modification, and compatible product selection utilizing validated Transfusion Information Systems.

  • Provides clerical, receptionist, and customer service support, including answering telephones and assisting patients, providers, and laboratory customers.

  • Maintains laboratory equipment, work spaces, and supplies through cleaning, disinfection, inventory control, and stocking activities.

  • Participates in laboratory and organizational performance improvement initiatives.

  • Assists with training, onboarding, and support of new laboratory team members as assigned.

  • Provides customer service support and assists in resolving issues within established guidelines.

  • Handles hazardous waste, biological specimens, chemicals, and related materials in accordance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Maintains compliance with Chemical Hygiene, Infection Prevention, Personal Protective Equipment, and laboratory safety policies.

  • Completes required continuing education, departmental training, and competency assessment requirements.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Technical skills and aptitudes related to laboratory procedures and processes performed within the assigned work area.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, with patients, staff, providers, and customers in a professional manner.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply written procedures, technical information, and numerical data.

  • Ability to comprehend, reason, problem solve, match information, and exercise sound judgment within established guidelines.

  • Ability to learn and utilize laboratory information systems, computer applications, and related technology platforms.
