Senior Software Engineering Manager (M5)
Collins Aerospace is seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineering Manager (M5) with a passion for aerospace software and the desire to lead a highly skilled, innovative team developing software for Cargo Systems used across multiple aircraft platform.
This is an onsite position that can be based in these locations:
- Winston Salem, North Carolina
- Lenexa, KS
- Jamestown, ND
What You'll Do:
- Provide leadership and direction to a team of approximately 15 software engineers responsible for the development, verification, and sustainment of Cargo Systems Software. Establish individual development plans, conduct ongoing performance and compensation reviews, and recognize exceptional contributions. Cultivate an engaged, empowered, and high‑performing team culture aligned with organizational objectives.
- Offer technical oversight for the development of DO‑178C‑compliant Cargo Systems Software deployed across multiple aircraft platforms. Support key technical decisions and ensure alignment with product‑line architecture. Communicate clearly on software concepts, integration expectations, and aerospace certification processes (DO‑178C, ARP
4754A). Promote modern engineering practices, including Agile methods, CI/CD, automated testing, and continuous process improvement. Build strong relationships with engineers, technical leads, and program stakeholders to ensure successful program execution. - Manage day‑to‑day engineering activities across multiple programs, ensuring predictable delivery of software builds and releases. Advance team tools, processes, and development methodologies to improve efficiency and product quality. Forecast staffing needs, oversee resource allocation, and maintain accurate capacity planning across programs and product lines. Ensure adherence to Collins engineering standards, software development processes, and certification requirements.
- Work closely with Systems, Test, Program Management, Platform teams, and Program Managers to maintain alignment on priorities and remove execution obstacles. Communicate goals, progress, risks, and decisions effectively to technical and non‑technical stakeholders. Identify opportunities for shared resources, efficiency gains, and best‑practice adoption across projects.
- Lead the development of engineering cost estimates for new pursuits. Contribute to proposal strategy and provide technical inputs related to scope, schedule, and risk assessments.
- Coach and develop software engineers, fostering a culture of accountability, communication, ownership, and continuous improvement. Ensure teams have the tools, training, and support required to deliver programs successfully. Serve as a key liaison between engineering disciplines and customers, facilitating clear communication and effective collaboration.
Qualifications You Must Have:
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without the company's immigration sponsorship now or in the future. The company will not offer immigration sponsorship for this position. The company will not seek an export authorization for this role
- At least 10 years of experience in software and/or systems engineering.
- Proven experience leading software teams.
- Hands-on experience with DO‑178B/C and ARP
4754A certification, preferably at DAL A or
B. - Demonstrated ability to manage scope, schedule, budget, and engineering risk.
