Job Description & How to Apply Below
The CNC Machinist III is a senior, highly skilled machinist responsible for the full lifecycle of complex CNC machining jobs: interpreting engineering drawings, developing and optimizing CNC programs, setting up and operating multi-axis machining centers, and inspecting finished parts to precise tolerances. This role works with minimal supervision, resolves difficult machining and tooling problems, and serves as a technical resource and mentor for less experienced machinists on the shop floor.
Responsibilities- Set up and operate CNC lathes, mills, and multi-axis machining centers (e.g., Fanuc, Mazatrol, Siemens, or Heidenhain controls) to produce parts that meet blueprint specifications.
- Read and interpret complex blueprints, CAD models, GD&T callouts, and process sheets to plan machining sequences and select appropriate tooling and fixtures.
- Write, edit, and optimize CNC programs (G-code/M-code) and use CAM software to generate toolpaths for new and existing parts.
- Select, install, and adjust cutting tools; set offsets, speeds, and feeds to maximize quality, cycle time, and tool life.
- Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, gauges, CMM) to verify conformance to specifications.
- Identify and troubleshoot machining problems (tool wear, part deviation, program errors, equipment malfunctions) and implement corrective actions.
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on machines, including coolant, tooling, and general upkeep, to minimize downtime.
- Identify and recommend process improvements to reduce setup time, scrap, and cycle time while maintaining quality standards.
- Train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to CNC Machinist I/II staff and new hires.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum 5+ years of progressive CNC machining experience, including complex setups and precision part production, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated proficiency reading blueprints, technical drawings, and GD&T specifications.
- Working knowledge of G-code/M-code programming and CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, NX, or equivalent).
- Hands-on experience with CNC controls such as Fanuc, Mazatrol, Siemens, or Heidenhain.
- Proficient with precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, height gauges, CMM) and shop math (feed/speed calculations).
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.
- Ability to train and mentor less experienced machinists and communicate effectively across departments.
- Ability to lift up to 40–50 lbs., stand for extended periods, and work safely around industrial machinery.
