Job Description for Senior Automotive Machinist

Role and Responsibilities

This role is a skilled machinist position responsible for precision engine rebuilding, component reconditioning, and machine shop operations in support of automotive repair services. The Senior Automotive Machinist performs hands-on work on engine blocks, cylinder heads, crankshafts, flywheels, brake rotors/drums, and related components using specialized machine shop equipment. The ideal candidate is capable of working independently with high accuracy and efficiency.

This is a physically demanding role requiring prolonged standing, bending, and lifting of heavy engine components throughout the day. Fine motor control, mechanical aptitude, and attention to tolerance specifications are essential.

Job Purpose

To provide high-quality machining and reconditioning services. The Senior Automotive Machinist ensures that engine and drivetrain components meet manufacturer specifications prior to installation, reducing warranty comebacks and extending the life of customer vehicles.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience in an automotive machine shop environment or completion of an accredited machining or automotive technology program.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate engine lathes, boring bars, valve seat and guide machines, surface grinders, honing machines, and brake lathes.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting micrometer, dial indicator, and bore gauge measurements to manufacturer tolerance specifications.
  • Must own or be willing to acquire personal precision measuring tools required for the role.
  • Ability to interpret and apply OEM service data and machining specifications from reference systems such as ALLDATA or equivalent.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain productivity standards.

Preferred Skills

  • ASE certification in Engine Machinist or a related discipline preferred.
  • Experience with both domestic and import engine reconditioning.
  • Familiarity with current engine technology, including aluminum block/head construction, variable valve timing systems, and performance applications.
  • Experience mentoring or training less experienced team members.
  • Working knowledge of automotive parts systems and digital reference resources.

Attitude of Candidate

A naturally positive, quality-focused employee is ideal. Patience and precision are critical, as machining work requires methodical attention to detail and tolerance compliance on every job. A customer-centered mindset is expected, as quality machining directly impacts vehicle reliability and customer trust.

Working Conditions

  • Machine shop environment with exposure to cutting fluids, metal dust, and noise. Appropriate PPE is required and provided.
  • Temperatures vary seasonally; shop is heated in winter and may be warm in summer.
  • Fast-paced skilled labor environment with emphasis on quality output and efficiency.
  • Clean, organized shop with a collaborative team atmosphere.

General Duties

  • Perform cylinder boring, honing, decking, valve seat grinding, and related engine block and cylinder head reconditioning services.
  • Resurface brake rotors and drums to manufacturer specifications using brake lathe equipment.
  • Inspect and measure all components prior to machining to determine serviceability and required machining operations.
  • Maintain detailed records of measurements and machining operations performed.
  • Set up, operate, maintain, and calibrate machine shop equipment.
  • Diagnose machining concerns and determine appropriate repair procedures.
  • Maintain an organized workstation and ensure all tools and equipment are returned and stored properly.
  • Work cooperatively with technicians and service managers to prioritize and complete machine shop work orders efficiently.
  • Mentor and assist entry-level machinists as needed.
  • Stay current on evolving engine technology and machining best practices through assigned and self-directed training.
  • Assist management with additional duties as requested.
  • Competitive compensation based on qualifications, experience, and skills.
  • Company-provided access to high-quality machining equipment and precision tooling.
  • Competitive Health, Dental, and Vision insurance plus voluntary benefits including accident, disability, and life insurance.
  • Uniforms and safety equipment provided.
  • 401(k) available and managed by a premium fund manager.
  • Work in a fun, respectful environment where employees are heard and valued.
  • Opportunity to contribute specialized skills within a growing automotive organization.
