Engineering Test Technician

The Engineering Test Technician performs field and laboratory testing, inspection, and documentation of construction materials to verify compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and quality requirements. This role supports construction projects by conducting tests on soil, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates, completing accurate reports, and collaborating closely with project teams to ensure consistent quality and safety on job sites.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct field testing of soil, concrete, asphalt, and aggregate materials in accordance with applicable standards and project specifications.
  • Perform construction inspections and quality control observations on active job sites to verify that work meets required quality and performance criteria.
  • Document test procedures, measurements, and results accurately and in a timely manner, ensuring clear and complete field and laboratory reports.
  • Prepare and submit field reports that summarize testing activities, findings, and any nonconformances or concerns identified during inspections.
  • Communicate test results, observations, and recommendations clearly with project managers, contractors, and clients to support informed decision-making.
  • Maintain testing equipment in good working condition, including performing basic calibration, cleaning, and routine checks.
  • Follow established safety procedures at all times while working in the field and laboratory, including safe handling of materials and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, internal quality procedures, and project-specific requirements when performing all testing and inspection activities.
  • Assist in organizing and managing samples, records, and documentation to support traceability and quality control.
  • Support continuous improvement of testing processes by providing feedback on field conditions, equipment performance, and test methods.
Essential Skills
  • Experience in construction materials testing or a closely related field is a plus and demonstrates familiarity with standard testing practices.
  • Hands-on knowledge of construction materials such as concrete, soil, asphalt, and aggregates, including basic understanding of their properties and performance characteristics.
  • Ability to perform concrete testing and other construction materials tests in both field and laboratory environments.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate measurements, precise documentation, and reliable test results.
  • Effective communication skills to convey findings and collaborate with project managers, contractors, and clients.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions while performing field testing and inspections.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds to handle equipment, samples, and materials on job sites and in the laboratory.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Skills & Qualifications
  • Technical training in construction, engineering technology, or a related discipline is preferred and supports advancement in the role.
  • Exposure to or experience with construction environments, including understanding of job site practices and safety considerations.
  • Familiarity with American Concrete Institute (ACI) standards and practices for concrete testing.
  • ACI certifications, NICET certifications, or other industry-recognized certifications in construction materials testing are preferred or willingness and ability to obtain them.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude to maintain and troubleshoot testing equipment.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tests, reports, and project assignments simultaneously.
Work Environment

This role operates in both field and laboratory settings. In the field, the Engineering Test Technician works on active construction sites, performing tests on soil, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates in outdoor conditions that may include heat, cold, rain, or other weather variations. The position requires frequent standing, walking on uneven surfaces, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds to move equipment and samples.
