Benefits

Purpose

This Biology Assistant role focuses on bird and bat conservation research within Glacier National Park. Biologists aim to inventory and monitor Species of Concern (SOC) such as Clark’s Nutcracker, grassland songbirds, bats, and eagles, and analyze data to produce scientific reports for park staff, collaborators, and the public.

Responsibilities

Assist in processing, compiling, analyzing, and summarizing data collected from various bird research, inventory, and monitoring programs.

Duties include:

  • Calculating grassland bird densities before bison reintroduction
  • Using BirdNET to analyze Clark’s Nutcracker acoustic data
  • Developing predictive or correlation models with CLNU and whitebark pinecone counts
  • Downloading and analyzing bat acoustic data with Sonobat
  • Hand‑identifying bat calls with a pre‑written protocol
  • Writing summaries, reports, maps, graphs, and charts for programs such as Harlequin Ducks, Golden and Bald Eagle Nest Monitoring, Grassland Songbirds, MAPS, and Hawk Watch
  • Submitting reports to the National Park Service IRMA
Deliverables

Deliver reports summarizing data, assisting in database entry, and finalizing documentation for the aforementioned long‑term monitoring programs.

Qualifications
  • United States citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident alien
  • High school diploma or equivalent; or must obtain a high school diploma before claiming the education award
  • Pre‑employment National Service Criminal History Check and host‑site security background check
  • Full 20‑week availability required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with data processing, compilation, and analysis
  • Proficiency with R or R‑studio and ability to learn BirdNET and Sonobat procedures
  • Independent work, teamwork, attention to detail, GIS experience, science‑writing experience
  • Ability to perform moderately strenuous field activities
Position Setting

Science Center in Park Headquarters, West Glacier, MT. Winter season may require travel to nearby towns (Hungry Horse, Columbia Falls, Whitefish, Kalispell) for supplies.

Housing

Park housing provided at no cost. May share rooms at times.

Vehicle and driver’s license requirements
  • Valid driver’s license required to drive a government vehicle
  • Personal vehicle recommended
Commitment

Time Requirements
  • Expected full‑time weekly service; schedules may vary by project needs

Orientation and Training
  • Training on site and project during term
  • Orientation covering Ameri Corps prohibited and unallowable activities
  • Free professional development webinars by Conservation Legacy staff
Evaluation and Reporting Requirements

Performance evaluated on completion of minimum Ameri Corps hours, satisfactory assignment completion, and meeting defined performance criteria.

Reporting includes bi‑weekly timesheets, monthly accomplishment tracking, a mid‑term report, and a final report.
