The Opportunity

The HVAC Journeyman is a skilled tradesperson responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of commercial and industrial HVAC systems. This position requires independent judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision across a variety of job sites. The Journeyman ensures compliance with all applicable safety regulations, building codes, and environmental standards while maintaining optimal system performance and delivering exceptional service to our customers.

What

You’ll Do
  • Installation: Install, start up, and commission new commercial HVAC systems including rooftop units, split systems, chillers, boilers, air handlers, and controls; read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams
  • Preventive Maintenance: Perform scheduled PM tasks on commercial HVAC equipment including filter changes, belt and bearing inspections, coil cleaning, refrigerant checks, and equipment lubrication
  • Diagnostics & Repair: Independently troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and refrigerant issues; identify root cause and perform necessary repairs or component replacements with minimal callback
  • Refrigerant Handling: Recover, reclaim, and recharge refrigerants in compliance with EPA Section 608 regulations
  • Controls & Electrical: Perform electrical troubleshooting, read wiring diagrams, work with thermostats, DDC controls, and building automation system (BAS) interfaces
  • Documentation: Complete service tickets, maintenance logs, and work orders accurately and in a timely manner
  • Customer Interaction: Communicate professionally with customers and building owners/operators, explain findings and recommended solutions clearly
  • Safety: Adhere to all P1 Safety protocols, OSHA standards, and site‑specific safety requirements at all times
Requirements

Required:

  • Journey-level HVAC certification or completion of a recognized HVAC apprenticeship program (4–5 years)
  • Minimum 4+ years of hands‑on journey-level experience in commercial HVAC service, installation, or maintenance
  • EPA 608 Universal Refrigerant Certification
  • Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot and repair commercial HVAC systems including rooftop units, split systems, air handlers, and refrigeration equipment
  • Proficiency reading blueprints, wiring diagrams, and equipment schematics
  • Ability to perform electrical troubleshooting, brazing, and soldering
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and digital devices
  • Must be able to satisfactorily pass a pre‑employment drug screen
  • Must possess a valid driver's license
  • Must be able to satisfactorily pass a motor vehicle record (MVR) check and meet P1 Service qualifications to operate a vehicle on company business
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • This position is represented by Pipe fitters Local Union #533. Current membership in this local union is a plus but is NOT required. Applicants who are not current members must meet union eligibility requirements.

Preferred:

  • Experience with building automation systems (BAS) and DDC controls
  • Commercial refrigeration or chiller experience
  • NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certification
  • Experience working in federal facilities, healthcare, or other regulated environments
  • Familiarity with OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
