Description

Key Responsibilities:

Technical & Planning - Read and interpret blueprints, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), isometric drawings, and technical specifications to determine layout and installation procedures. Plan and schedule pipe installation sequencing to maintain project workflow and coordinate with other trades (e.g., electrical, structural). Perform material takeoffs, order necessary materials, tools, and equipment, and manage on-site inventory. Oversee the fabrication, assembly, and installation of various types of pipe and materials.

Quality & Safety - Ensure all work is performed safely and in strict compliance with OSHA standards and company safety policies. Conduct regular site inspections to identify and rectify potential hazards. Inspect completed work to ensure quality, accuracy, and adherence to project codes and specifications. Monitor and oversee essential quality activities like pipe system testing.

Communication & Administration - Serve as the primary point of contact between the crew, the Project Superintendent/Manager. Maintain accurate, detailed records of work progress, as-built conditions, and safety documentation. Troubleshoot on-site technical issues and recommend solutions to avoid delays. Track job costs and production rates to ensure work remains within budget.

Essential Qualifications & Skills

To be effective, a Piping Foreman must possess a strong blend of technical expertise, supervisory experience, and interpersonal skills.

Technical & Industry Knowledge

  • Expert knowledge of piping systems (including materials, joining methods like welding/threading/soldering, fittings, and testing procedures).
  • Proficiency in reading blueprints, P&IDs, and isometric drawings.
  • Familiarity with construction methods and techniques, particularly related to excavation and utility installation.
  • A solid understanding of relevant building codes and OSHA safety regulations.

Experience & Education

  • High School Diploma or GED is typically required.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience as a Pipefitter, Pipe Welder, or related craft.
  • Relevant Journeyman certification (e.g., Pipefitter, Plumber) is preferred.
  • OSHA 30-Hour certification is frequently mandatory.

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey instructions clearly, coordinate with management, and communicate with clients.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills to resolve on-site issues quickly and efficiently.
  • Physical Stamina: The role requires significant physical exertion, including lifting heavy materials (up to 50-90 lbs.), standing for long periods, and working in varied outdoor weather conditions and often challenging terrain.
