Bridge Inspection Team Leader (MassDOT Bridge Inspector III) – 260003WB
Incumbents in this series conduct inspections and maintain and administer the division's inspection program for Massachusetts bridges and structures in accordance with NBIS (National Bridge Inspection Standards) as defined in 23 CFR Part 650 Subpart
C. They inspect bridges that meet NBIS definitions as well as certain ancillary and appurtenant highway structures and perform other inspection-related engineering duties as needed. The primary purpose is to ensure that bridges and related structures are safe for the traveling public in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- Act as a Bridge Inspection Team Leader and perform structure inspection based on the AASHTO Bridge Inspector Reference Manual and department procedures (Bridge Inspection Handbook and MassDOT Tunnel Inspection policies).
- Prepare for assigned bridge inspections by reviewing plans and inspection records and ensuring availability of equipment and tools for all team members.
- Maintain safety of inspection teams and the public by ensuring proper safety equipment, procedures, and safety practices for inspections over water and railways.
- Obtain and review available plans, inspection records, rating reports, dive reports, and maintenance records relevant to bridge, tunnel, and facilities inspections.
- Conduct rapid overview walks at the start of inspections to familiarize with the structure and identify problem areas needing closer attention.
- Report deficiencies using established procedures in the Bridge and Tunnel Inspection Handbook and other applicable policies.
- Verify all equipment is collected and returned to the proper storage location after inspections.
- Prepare inspection reports that accurately describe the structure's condition using department-approved templates, forms, and electronic data collection systems, ensuring quality inspections.
- Perform other job-related duties as required.
- Signing bonus: This position is eligible for a $5,000 signing bonus for new hires. Current MassDOT employees are not eligible. The bonus is paid in two parts: $3,000 in the first paycheck and $2,000 after successful completion of the probationary period.

QualificationsMinimum Entrance Requirements

- Applicants must meet the minimum entrance requirements for a Team Leader as defined in 23 CFR Part 650 Subpart C:
- A) Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- B) Engineer-In-Training certification.
- C) at least two (2) years of full-time bridge inspection experience in a responsible capacity.
- D) successful completion of a Federal Highway Administration-approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course.
- E) or an equivalent combination of experience and substitutions allowed by federal regulations.
- I. Five (5) years’ experience in Bridge Inspector titles (Bridge Inspection Engineer I/II) with FHWA training may substitute for the Bachelor’s Degree and EIT.
