Position: Bridge Inspection Team Leader (MassDOT Bridge Inspector III)
Position Summary

Incumbents in this series conduct inspections and maintain and administer the Division's inspection program for Massachusetts bridges and structures in accordance with the requirements of the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) as defined in the Code of Federal Regulations, 23 CFR Part 650 Subpart

C. They also inspect bridges that do not meet the NBIS definition of a bridge and can be assigned to inspect other ancillary and appurtenant highway structures and perform other inspection related engineering duties on an as needed basis.

The primary purpose of this work is to perform the inspection of bridges and ancillary highway structures in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to ensure that they are safe for the traveling public to use.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Act as a Bridge Inspection Team Leader and perform structure inspection based on the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Bridge Inspector Reference Manual for the Condition and Evaluation of Bridges and following procedures established in the department's Bridge Inspection Handbook and MassDOT Tunnel Inspection policies.

* Prepares for assigned bridge inspections by obtaining and reviewing all available plans and inspection records for structures that are to be inspected and by ensuring the availability of equipment and tools needed by all team members for each inspection assignment.

* Maintains the safety of bridge inspection teams and the public, by ensuring that the proper safety equipment is available and that it is used correctly; ensuring that all safety procedures are in place; and ensuring that proper procedures are used for inspections over water and railways.

* Obtain and review available plans, inspection records, rating reports, dive reports and maintenance records pertinent to bridge, tunnel and/or facility inspection.

* Perform rapid overview walks around inspection area at start of the inspection to gain familiarity with current structure and disclose problem areas requiring closer attention.

* Report deficiencies following established procedure in the Bridge and Tunnel Inspection Handbook and in compliance with existing policies as directed.

* Verify that all equipment is collected and returned to proper storage location upon completion of inspection.

* Prepare inspection reports that fully and accurately describe the structure's condition using department approved templates, forms, and electronic data collections systems and ensures the quality of inspections.

* Perform other job-related duties as required.

This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus ("Signing Bonus") if you are newly hired rent MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts:
1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee's first paycheck.
2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee's probationary period.
