Position: Secretary to the Principal

Secretary to the Principal y's County Public Schools, Benjamin Banneker Elementary School – Leonardtown, Maryland. Starting immediately, full‑time 12‑month position under the EASMC‑ESP salary schedule (Range 17) with a salary of $46,059–$69,664 per year. Effective June 2026.

Job Description

This position serves as the secretary to the principal, performing secretarial, financial, clerical, and public relations work in a school office under the general supervision of the principal. Duties include assisting the principal by relieving him/her of clerical and administrative details, coordinating the work of clerical staff, performing a variety of complex clerical tasks, ensuring that school office activities are conducted in accordance with established policies, and leading and training other workers as applicable.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Receive and deposit monies into appropriate accounts; verify billings and issue checks for payment
  • Generate purchase orders and confirm delivery, including direct contact with vendors
  • Use effective office practices and bookkeeping procedures to complete tasks
  • Compose routine and non‑technical correspondence; prepare special reports and summaries as required
  • Screen incoming telephone calls, answer general inquiries and direct those, where practical, to other school personnel
  • Review incoming mail, obtain and attach pertinent information, prioritize, and route to school personnel as appropriate
  • Establish and maintain significant, sensitive, confidential, and personal logs, files, documents, and records
  • Prepare correspondence, observations, and evaluations
  • Prepare and maintain financial records including payroll, leave, and school activity funds
  • Assist with scheduling school facilities and maintaining policies and regulations related to the use of school facilities
  • Assist the principal by relieving him/her of clerical and administrative details
  • Maintain ledgers and journals, make bank reconciliations, and prepare reports, statements, and summaries
  • Maintain time records and compute hours worked within pay periods for teachers, staff, and substitutes and distribute paychecks
  • Perform other related and non‑related job duties as assigned
Qualifications

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Associates degree OR three (3) years of general office, clerical, or secretarial experience
  • Passing score on a proficiency exam conducted by SMCPS (applicants must establish proficiency prior to accepting employment)
  • Credit report or credit history for consideration of employment with St. Mary's County Public Schools required in this fiduciary position

Preferred

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience
  • High School/Trade School degree
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required
Term of Employment

Full‑time twelve‑month position.

Salary Grade Range

The salary for this position will be based on the EASMC‑ESP salary schedule for twelve‑month seven‑hour employees – Range 17.
