Officer Unarmed PRN

General Summary of Position

Ensures a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Patrols hospital property, responds to assistance calls, and reports conditions that may impact security or safety. Mentors and trains security staff, assumes charge when needed, and works a flexible schedule including off‑shifts. May obtain and maintain a Maryland or DC Special Police Officer commission to perform duties as an Unarmed Security Officer.

• Assists supervisor with daily shift supervision, monitoring the communication center and security officers to ensure duties are performed correctly; makes on‑the‑spot corrections when needed.
• Acts as a resource or mentor to security staff.
• Conducts in‑service training.
• Assumes charge role as needed.
• Assists with training new associates as necessary.
• Collects and secures patient valuables and lost‑and‑found articles.
• Conducts designated security patrols throughout the facility; may patrol the campus via motor vehicle or bicycle.
• Observes and monitors conditions or persons that might require police action, controls access, inspects packages, and reports all safety, security, and law violations.
• Contributes to the achievement of system and departmental goals, adhering to policies, procedures, quality standards, and regulations.
• Responds immediately to emergencies to assist employees and customers; responds to security and medical code calls.
• Monitors camera surveillance and other security technology; monitors conduct of patients and visitors, confronting unauthorized persons for questioning as needed.
• Participates in investigations; maintains records and prepares incident reports, following up to close incidents and notifying authorities or superiors as required.
• Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams and represents the department in community outreach and committees.
• Utilizes nonviolent crisis intervention and de‑escalation techniques to keep staff, patients, and visitors safe, calm, and respected; assists with restraining as needed.
• Testifies at legal proceedings, hearings, and trials.
• When law enforcement authority is required, secures the scene, preserves evidence, detains and secures suspected criminals, and assists responding law‑enforcement agencies; completes reports and notifies Med Star Legal Counsel when subpoenaed.
• Works cross‑functionally to ensure safe and secure environments.
• Assists in developing departmental goals, policies, and procedures; ensures compliance with hospital procedures and regulations.
• Interacts with visitors, maintaining designated security posts as directed, and ensures quality outcomes by communicating with security staff and the public.

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Associate’s degree preferred.

• If SPO commissioned: minimum of 1 year of Med Star satisfactory performance as a Security Officer I required.
• 5‑7 years total related security or law‑enforcement experience (inside or outside of Med Star) required.

• DL – Valid State Driver’s License in good standing required.
• MD Special Police Commission – MDSPC preferred.
• Special Police Officer – DC – SPO preferred.
• Must satisfy ongoing training requirements to maintain SPO commission in Maryland and/or DC.
• IAHSS – Certification as a Security Officer (Basic or Advanced) preferred.
• Must successfully complete all Med Star initial training related to violence prevention, de‑escalation, and crisis prevention intervention.
• CPR – Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 days required.
• Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

This position has a hiring range of USD $18.70 - USD $32.72 /Hr.
