This advertisement is used to create a candidate pool for the 2026‑2027 school year. The pool will be active through June 30, 2027. The District reserves the right to re‑advertise and modify the announcement as appropriate.
Nature of WorkThe Safety and Security Assistant supports staff and administration in maintaining a safe and orderly school environment.
Essential Functions- Professionally relate to and collaborate with co‑workers, students, and community members.
- Maintain confidentiality as required.
- Use technology effectively to complete tasks.
- Report to work daily and on time.
- Organize, supervise, coordinate, and prioritize tasks.
- Work independently with complex oral and/or written instructions.
- Communicate courteously and tactfully with staff, students, parents, and the community.
- Work under pressure and in all weather conditions.
- Stand and walk continuously for an undetermined duration.
- Demonstrate skills to address school disciplinary problems and relate well with adolescents, teachers, and counselors.
- Utilize technologically based security platforms daily.
- Manage time efficiently and make decisions within assigned responsibility in a fast‑paced professional environment.
- Possess knowledge of St. Mary’s County Public School System programs, policies, and procedures.
- Monitors bus duty and student arrival/departure.
- Patrols all school grounds, parking lots, and sports fields; assists with parking or driving violations.
- Conducts perimeter checks of all doors and windows.
- Screens and scans students and visitors to prevent contraband or weapons.
- Intervenes in student altercations per Maryland Education Article 7‑307 and relevant force and restraint policies.
- Operates the school security vestibule, including technology-based visitor management, camera surveillance, and access control.
- Follows all security and emergency procedures and assists with emergency responses.
- Monitors late‑arriving students and escorts them to class.
- Monitors students during class changes, in hallways, and during restrooms/locker room checks.
- Retrieves and escorts students to and from various locations as needed.
- Monitors the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch and ensures student safety.
- Assists with incident investigations impacting safety and security.
- Intervenes in physical altercations and assists in de‑escalation and restraint of students.
- Writes incident reports according to school guidelines.
- Monitors movement and transfer of students attending satellite campuses.
- Assists with in‑school intervention center monitoring.
- Provides security support for athletic events, assemblies, and other school functions.
- Monitors the student crime solvers program and assists students with reporting information.
- Attends all Safety and Security Assistant meetings and trainings as assigned.
- Reports violations of law and unusual activities or unauthorized persons to appropriate school personnel.
- Performs security duties during school functions and activities.
- Completes daily school safety and security checklists and other required forms.
- Performs other related and non‑related job duties as assigned.
- Obtains and maintains required certifications and training, including:
- Maryland Model School Security Employee Training Program (70 hours)
- Certification in de‑escalation and restraint (8 hours)
- Certification in CPR and first aid (2 hours)
