About The Role

Are you a recent graduate with a degree in marine or environmental science? Do you want to develop practical taxonomic and field skills while contributing to marine monitoring and consultancy projects? Are you looking for an entry‑level role that offers structured training and long‑term professional development?

APEM Biolabs are seeking Graduate Marine Scientists to join our Marine Biolabs & Surveys team. Our analysts play a vital role in assessing the health of marine habitats for clients including water companies, regulators and consultancies. Clients may send samples directly to our team, or these are often collected by APEM staff as part of larger projects. The specification of analyses is tailored to the needs of each project, and APEM is committed to fostering specialist taxonomic skills and offering rewarding, long‑term development for aquatic scientists.

This is a hands‑on, entry‑level role, based in our lab in Letchworth, where you will be trained in processing benthic samples, progressing from sieving and extraction through to species‑level identification. You’ll also take part in nearshore, offshore and intertidal surveys, gaining practical field experience that supports the ecological assessments we deliver. Previous experience is desirable but not essential, full training will be provided.

Essential
  • Degree in Marine Biology or another related subject.
  • Basic understanding of marine invertebrate identification and the major taxonomic groups likely to be encountered.
Desirable
  • Experience of marine invertebrate sample processing.
  • Experience of marine sampling techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Driving licence
  • Attention to detail.
  • IT literate.

APEM Biolabs offers a supportive environment with structured training and a clear progression path for aquatic scientists. If you’re keen to build a career in marine benthic ecology and fieldwork, we’d love to hear from you.

Next steps

We are focused on creating a diverse and inclusive team. If you can’t tick every box on our job description, then we are still keen to hear from you and are open to supporting your development. That may be working part‑time or supporting you to gain experience in a specific area – we are a growing company and are able to adapt roles to reflect individual skills.
