Job Brief

The Galt Museum & Archives is accepting applications for the non-permanent, term position of Collection Assistant Intern
. We are looking for an enthusiastic, independent individual with cultural object cataloguing skills to fill a non-permanent opportunity supported through the Young Canada Works (YCW) Internship program. This will be an approximately 19-week position that will run from November 16, 2020, to March 31, 2021, and is an excellent opportunity for an individual to build their career in the museum field.

Approximately 19 weeks, starting November 16, 2020, to March 31, 2021

Duties

Under the Collection Technician's direction, the Assistant will add (catalogue) new museum acquisitions to the museum’s object database. The worker will handle, label, classify, appraise, house, describe, and enter data into the museum’s electronic database. Finally, they will photograph all objects related to their assigned cataloguing in an in-house studio setting.

Qualifications

Successful candidates must observe the highest standards of artifact care, maintain attention to detail, and work independently and with volunteers. The candidate should hold a post-secondary degree in humanities, social sciences or art, or a post-graduate program in cultural resource management. Strong research, database and records management skills, and writing skills are required. Knowledge and application of standard museum or archival practices, artifact cataloguing, studio photography, and managing volunteers will be considered important assets.
