The Role

Palliser School Division is seeking a dedicated and proactive Health and Safety Coordinator. This is a unique, shared-service position providing Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) leadership for both Palliser School Division and Horizon School Division. While the successful candidate will be a Palliser employee, they will provide critical support to both jurisdictions to ensure compliance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations, and Code.

Reporting to the Associate Superintendent of Business Services, the Coordinator will lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of comprehensive safety programs across a diverse range of school environments and facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Program Leadership:
    Develop, maintain, and support OH&S programs and administrative procedures for both divisions.
  • Compliance & Advisory:
    Advise on legislation interpretation and ensure both jurisdictions meet all safety standards.
  • Inspections & Hazards:
    Conduct regular facility inspections, manage hazard assessments, and standardize safe work procedures.
  • Incident Management:
    Investigate reports, work refusals, and injuries to provide recommendations for future prevention.
  • Training & Orientation:
    Coordinate and facilitate safety meetings, employee orientations, and training seminars.
  • Emergency Planning:
    Maintain and update emergency response plans and provide leadership during crisis situations.
  • Technology Management:
    Utilize web-based applications (Google Suite/Public Works) to track training and records.
Qualifications
  • Education:

    Graduate of a recognized Health and Safety program.
  • Professional Designation:
    Hold or be working toward a CRSP, CHSC, or CIH designation.
  • Experience:

    3 to 5 years of related OHS experience. Experience in a school board or educational setting is a strong asset.
  • Technical Knowledge:
    Thorough understanding of OH&S legislation, fire codes, building codes, and indoor air quality.
  • Skills:

    Exceptional communication and organizational skills, with the ability to manage complex tasks independently.
Requirements
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle (travel between Palliser and Horizon locations is required).
  • Availability for occasional evening or weekend work.
  • Successful completion of a recent Criminal Record Check (within 3 months), including the vulnerable sector check.
About The Shared Service

This role serves two prominent southern Alberta school jurisdictions. Palliser School Division serves approximately 8,100 students across 51 schools from Lethbridge to south of Calgary. Horizon School Division serves approximately 3,400 students across 20 schools, spanning from the Town of Taber to the communities of Vauxhall, Barnwell, Enchant, Grassy Lake, and Hays. This partnership allows for collaborative safety standards and resource sharing across southern Alberta.
