Job Description & How to Apply Below
Since 1941, United Way has funded and partnered with local programs that help children, families, and individuals move from crisis toward stability and opportunity.
We believe better decisions happen when our board reflects the communities we serve, which is why we’re looking for people with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, professions, and lived experiences. Whether you’re a student, a tradesperson, a healthcare worker, a business owner, or someone with lived experience of the challenges facing our community, your perspective matters.
While board service comes with important legal and governance responsibilities, we provide orientation, mentorship, and ongoing training to help you grow into the role with confidence.
As a board member, you will help guide the future of United Way through governance and strategic leadership. This role is not hands‑on volunteer work; it is heads‑on volunteer work, collaborating closely with our Executive Director.
Responsibilities
Prepare for and attend monthly board meetings (held virtually and in-person in Lethbridge, AB) and special events
Serve on at least one board committee
Review and contribute to strategic and financial decisions to ensure that resources are available for United Way programs and services
Support fundraising and community engagement
Make an annual personal financial contribution at a level that is personally meaningful
Review organizational priorities, budgets, policies, and bylaws
Act as an ambassador for United Way in the community, representing the organization in a positive, supportive manner
Participate in the hiring and performance management of the Executive Director (ED). The day‑to‑day operations of United Way are the responsibility of the ED, who reports to the Board of Directors.
Bring a sense of humour and active listening in meetings, and open‑mindedly consider the opinions and concerns of others.
Age Requirements
18 years old or above
Other Requirements
Community‑minded
Integrity, accountability, and sound judgment
Collaboration and teamwork
Ability to think strategically and ask thoughtful questions
Curiosity and willingness to learn
Networking and relationship building
Passion for strengthening our community
Willingness to learn about nonprofit governance
Schedule
The full Board meets approximately once per month (9–11 meetings per year), typically on weekday evenings for up to 2 hours. Meetings are typically the 4th Monday of the month
Directors serve on one committee, which generally meets 6–10 times per year.
Most meetings are held virtually, with occasional in‑person meetings and community events.
Each board member serves a three‑year term. We recruit yearly to support an ongoing cycle of incoming and outgoing board members.
