Job Description
The Biology Department at South Plains College thrives on the dedication and passion of its faculty and staff. Our department values an integrated approach to instruction We've embraced an integrated approach to instruction, where lectures and lab complement one another and student have a robust and thorough learning experience.
We are committed to fostering lecture and lab classes averaging 30 students, allowing for focused attention. Outside the classroom, faculty members are consistently available during office hours for student guidance and support. We take pride in our dedication to continuous improvement, and faculty are encouraged to participate in internal and external professional development opportunities to remain up-to-date with the latest professional and educational practices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned and/or included in the Faculty Handbook.
Conducts college courses for undergraduate students by performing the following duties listed below:
TEACHING:
* Conducts teaching assignments in Anatomy & Physiology within the prescribed curriculum. Prepares and delivers effective lectures and laboratory exercises to students. Stimulates class discussions and strives to involve all students in the lecture and lab experience. Uses knowledge of diverse communities and learning styles to implement effective strategies in instruction.
* Counsel students requiring assistance outside classes and communicate expectations to students at the beginning of the semester including grading procedures and overall coursework expectations; grade student performance consistently and equitably for all.
* Maintains scheduled office hours for student consultation.
* Maintains accurate and complete course records.
DEPARTMENT:
* Participates actively in departmental responsibilities and opportunities.
* Participates in the development and support of their discipline by revising curricula, developing lab exercises, and managing lab inventory.
* Participates in the evaluation of the instructional process and uses innovative strategies to continually improve learning.
* Values the collaborative process.
* Develop and implement effective strategies to retain students through academic advising, engage with the larger campus community, and emphasize soft skill development for academic success.
* Participates in his/her own performance appraisal.
COLLEGE:
* Meets professional assignments in accordance with the College's calendar and contractual obligations.
* Commits to college mission and goals through participating in planning departmental objectives, scheduling, and budget requests.
* Work with student clubs and/or organizations and serves as a mentor to students.
* Demonstrates verbal and written communication skills to support and enhance effective interaction between departments, faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds.
* Utilizes technology to facilitate learning and to access data, maintain records, generate reports, and communicate with others.
* Participates in professional development activities.
* Participates and serves in/at college functions, activities, and committees.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Master's degree with 18 graduate hours in Biology or Biological Sciences.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general scientific articles, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, correspondence, and procedure manuals. Effective presentation skills required and ability to respond to questions from students, members of the college community, and the general public.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.). Ability to solve practical problems and handle various situations with staff, students, and technology. Use common sense in everyday situations to create a healthy learning and working environment.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
Ability to work in a highly technical environment. Computer competency is critical.
