Summary

A Para educator is responsible for assisting the teacher/therapist in providing instruction and support to assigned students in an educational setting. The role promotes intellectual, behavioral, emotional, and social growth. Paraeducators may be assigned to individual or multiple students and all functions are performed under the direction of the teacher/therapist.

Essential Functions
  • Provide one-on-one tutoring when scheduled separately from teacher instruction.
  • Assist with classroom management, including organization of instructional materials.
  • Communicate with teachers and IU/district staff regarding ongoing student needs.
  • Provide support in all educational settings, escorting and supervising students to various locations.
  • Assist students with the use, maintenance, and operation of equipment and augmentative communication devices.
  • Assist with ambulation, positioning, and transfers.
  • Support students in range‑of‑motion and other therapeutic exercises.
  • Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADL) such as feeding, grooming, bathing, toileting, and diapering.
  • Monitor health conditions or medical concerns, including seizure precautions.
  • Accompany students on school bus or other vehicles.
  • Provide cues, redirection, or monitoring to ensure ADL task completion for students with cognitive impairments.
  • Observe or intervene to assist with ADL completion.
  • Cue students to pay attention, participate, and complete tasks.
  • Participate in implementation of students’ IEPs and C.E.R.s when applicable.
  • Assist with data collection of student performance.
  • When qualified, may provide occasional transport of students.
  • Follow individualized support plans such as behavior, communication, health, transportation plans.
  • Track student information on needs, strengths, gains, and problem areas.
  • Assist with setting up the educational environment and preparing instructional materials.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

Moderate noise level. Reasonable accommodations may be made to allow individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Physical Demands

Regular sitting and use of hands; frequent walking, reaching, and talking. May stand for long periods, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Frequently lift or move up to 10 lbs, occasionally up to 25 lbs. Visual abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Schedule and Travel

Full‑time, 185‑day calendar. Monday through Friday, 7.5‑hour days. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required. Travel or transport may be expected.

Qualifications

Education and experience must meet the Bucks IU “Highly Qualified” Para educator designation.

  • Associate or Bachelor degree, or at least 48 college/university credits.
  • High school diploma or equivalency with successful local assessment;
    Credential of Competency for Special Education Paraeducators from the Pennsylvania Department of Education meets this requirement for those without 48 credits or a degree.
  • Preferred experience working with students with disabilities.
  • Proficiency in processing software, email, sending attachments, and billing tracking.
  • CPR & First Aid certification required.
  • Crisis Prevention Institute Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention training required.
  • Citizenship or work authorization in the United States required.
