Position: Cape Henlopen Multiple Naturalists Positions

Overview

Cape Henlopen's beaches attract thousands of visitors who enjoy ocean activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, and kayaking, as well as clamming, paddle-boarding, and wind-surfing. A wide selection of activities and programs for children and adults are led by Seaside Nature Center staff each week. Fort Miles is a place for history enthusiasts to learn about Delaware stories and WWII history.

Summary

of Positions

A variety of seasonal Park Interpreter positions may be available at Cape Henlopen State Park. Salary ranges and general responsibilities are listed below.

  • Park Interpreter: $16.75 – Responsible for developing and conducting interpretive programs that increase students’ and visitors’ awareness of their environment and foster appreciation, enjoyment, and utilization of Delaware State Parks cultural and natural resources. In addition, this post involves the care and maintenance of the Nature Center’s live animal exhibits.
  • Historical Park Interpreter: $16.75 – Duties include assisting with the museum's collection and working with historic weapons at Fort Miles.
  • Day Camp Co-Director: $19.00 – Responsible for planning, coordinating, and leading activities for summer day camps. Duties include creating and maintaining a fun, positive, and safe camp environment for campers and staff.
  • Assistant Day Camp Director: $17.00 – Responsible for leading daily activities for summer day camps. Duties include creating and maintaining a fun, positive, and safe camp environment for campers and staff.

Work is performed indoors and outdoors, including weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled to meet facility needs.

Essential Functions

  • Deliver interpretive programs to participants of all ages in a variety of contexts.
  • Interpret the history of Fort Miles to visitors on a daily basis.
  • Develop and maintain exhibits, park bulletin boards, and educational material.
  • Provide general customer service and park information to visitors.
  • Lead educational and recreational hikes for park visitors.
  • May include live animal care and handling.
  • Demonstrate responsibility, dependability, and good communication skills.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

Applicants must have education, training, and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

Park Interpreter
  • Six months experience working with children and young adults (e.g., environmental educator, classroom assistant, tutor, camp counselor, or youth volunteer).
  • Experience with care and handling of animals.
  • Knowledge of natural, cultural, historical resources or parks and recreation.
  • Knowledge of public speaking or interpretation.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked, cancelled, or disqualified).
Historical Park Interpreter
  • College coursework in history or interpretation.
  • Experience teaching and/or interpretation with public groups.
  • Experience with care and maintenance of historical artifacts, and/or research.
  • Knowledge of WWII history and local Delaware history preferred.
  • Knowledge of public speaking or interpretation.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked, cancelled, or disqualified).
Day Camp Co-Director
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • One year of experience working in a camp program for children or young adults.
  • One year of experience in supervising groups, staff, or volunteers.
  • Knowledge of recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, boating, rock climbing, or swimming; knowledge of local plants, animals or history is a plus.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license (not suspended, revoked, cancelled, or disqualified).
Assistant Day Camp Director
  • Must be at least 20 years of age.
